clavierankh wrote on Yesterday at 10:21pm:

With writing like that in the comic books the TV version wasn't going to be another Emma Peel.

I'm very familiar with the comic book you refer to, but that characterization was not running through all of her appearances in the late 60s. For example, I recall a guest spot in Justice League of America, and she was not "girly girl" as in the story you mention, and certainly not like the TV version.

I believe the differences expose the problem: comic book writers were still trying to find a solid personality for their Batgirl, but the TV crew had a single, hardline view: Batgirl must act like a teenage girl with a crush, and know nothing of detective or fighting skills. That was the TV Batgirl's identity from her debut in the promotional film "Enter Batgirl, Exit Penguin" until "Minerva, Mayhem and Millionaires."

Even the early 70s Equal Pay commercial's version is more of the same, while the comic book Batgirl of the same period had taken another path: superheroics--even mystery stories in the pages of Detective Comics.

Robin in trouble wrote on 05/11/12 at 4:49pm:

She made Catwoman the perfect mix of beauty, danger and sly wit. I think her feelings for Batman were a bit overdone but that didn't detract from the performance.

"Sipping sodas with Batman" wasn't her idea, but who knew such matters would be discussed over 40 years later? These shows were knocked out pretty fast. Julie loved Stan Ross's sense of humor (I know, some don't!), so if some episodes played it a little sappy in creating a tension between Batman and Catwoman, she wasn't about to tamper with the writer's ideas. She respects the creative visions of her co-workers too much for that.

In retrospect, exploring a Batman-Catwoman romance helped lift those episodes from just being camp, or having to rely on action and plot. We saw more of their personalities in those episodes. With Batman vs Joker or Riddler or Penguin -- the crusader's got the same attitude toward all of them, really; a stoic impatience with their antics.

"The way Julie's character turned into a "puppy love gone bad" kind of martyr in the second season gives Lee the nod over Julie..." Interesting, as this makes the question "who is your favorite Catwoman" in the writing, rather than the woman in the suit. If Lee had played in those episodes, she'd have had to deliver the same lines Julie did.

No question all the Catwomen (including movie versions) have brought different qualities to the part. One might even argue that playing Catwoman is right up there with playing Juliet in Shakespeare or Stella in "Streetcar..." as something any actress would love to sink her teeth into.
I can understand how you feel about going back and watching how the character of Batman was portrayed back in the 40's. I too prefer the GH tv series, because that's what i was exposed to as a young kid. But once i looked back to the older versions of the GH character back in 1940, and the serial chapters back then, it just gives you more options to reflect back on.

Another reason I hated Olga is that she ruined Egghead, turning him from a mastermind, super-intelligent arch-criminal to a simpering Dr. Smith from Lost in Space clone. Awful.

And I'll be honest, full disclosure here, my mother's family all hailed from Russia and the Ukraine, so I actually find Olga somewhat offensive in her cartoonishness, much like those here with Native American ancestry dislike some of those stereotyped characters.

As I've said before on this board, if they had to have a Russian/Soviet villainess, I would have preferred it be somebody like Lee Meriwether's Miss Kitka character in the movie. [Granted, I realize the character was a faux Soviet.] But a more glamorous, realistic female Soviet Cold War spy type actually could have harked back to the halcyon days of S1, but we all know the show was past the point of no return by then.
I liked the Chandell story. Liberace was fine as Chandell but lousy as twin brother hARRY. It would have been better to have him be a non twin brother and get A different actor , maybe someone like Roger C Carmel as Harry.

I liked because it went away from the established format by having Bruce and Dick on vacation. Seeing every thing covered with sheets in the Batcave was a little eerie.

Second it brought in another kind of villain. The duo had to figure out who the villain was and what his motive was. More stories that strayed from the Arch Villain of the week might have helped the show.

It was stories like this that made miss the established format in the third season, because you weren't jarred by a change in the established routine as you were in this episode.

It just did not fit in a crime series.

However, a can watch all episodes of Hornet and be entertained.
