Re: TO THE BATPOLES #222 Semple’s Batnotes: Seven Surprising Points

Agree with just about all you said and Semple living in Spain didn't help. For our book, I've been rewatching the TV Academy interview of Semple. He emphasizes that he was focused on writing movies and/or plays, and didn't see himself as a TV writer. I suppose that's why he excused himself from scr...

Re: TO THE BATPOLES #222 Semple’s Batnotes: Seven Surprising Points

Regarding casualties among the villains' henchmen: one example you didn't mention occurred at the end of "Zelda The Great," when the two hired killers accidentally rub each other out in whimsical "Tom and Jerry" style. Right, that came up on Bat Bits, but we didn't mention it on...

TO THE BATPOLES #222 Semple’s Batnotes: Seven Surprising Points

https://assets.libsyn.com/show/65262/HolyAshtray.jpg We’re back with a one-off episode to share several exciting pieces of news! First, Lorenzo Semple’s BATNOTES memo (also known as “Bat Poop”), sent to prospective Batman writers, outlines Semple’s concept of the show. It was thought by many to be ...

Re: Disney Batman

I'm afraid it would be more like LEGENDS OF THE SUPERHEROES. I feel certain that would have been the fate of the '66 show had it not been canceled when it was. A 21st-century version, who can say?

Re: Early Halloween - What if Batman wore a Ben Cooper costume instead?

Of course the front of the costume has to have the name of the character written on. Always drove me crazy as a kid because these people don't wear nametags. But I assume they did that so that adults would know who you were dressed as.

Re: Catwoman's theme

There are several possible candidate instruments from that era, other than the venerable theremin. Look up other such early eerie-sounding devices as the novachord, the ondes martenot, and the trautonium. Gadgets like these, alongside the theremin, were popular in classic sci-fi and horror films, p...

Re: Catwoman's theme

Thanks, Simon. Good to know a soprano was actually used. Restores my faith and love fully now for the original series theme making it feel like an outer-space mermaid is really singing a siren song from somewhere deep out in the stars. If they would have used a theremin it would have been akin to t...

Hadn't considered that. It could be. What does everyone else think?

Yes, exactly. Obviously I get the brass accompaniment, but the main melody seems to be played on some kind of keyboard I can't identify.

Catwoman's theme

OK, here's a question that's always been in the back of my mind when watching a Catwoman episode. That mysterious, somewhat-meow-like theme: What instrument is it being played on? Sounds like some kind of electronic keyboard instrument.

Just for the sake of being completist, here it is as Minerva Matthews' house....

It's funny how seeing it at a different angle makes it feel like a different location from its other appearances!

Mr. Glee wrote: Sat Oct 11, 2025 1:00 pm The source for the info may have been a letter that William Dozier sent Adam West, dated Sep. 13 '65 (Monday), in which he discusses the screen tests, which he indicates were made on the just-passed "Friday."
Thanks. I'll have to see if I can find that in my unorganized mess of PDFs!

Re: Dates of screen tests?

Aha! I found the answer. "Batman: A Celebration of the Classic TV Series" by Bob Garcia and Joe Desris pinpoints it as September 10, 1965. I regard this book as the best and most nearly error-free book on the series. I don't know how Garcia and Desris got this info, but it makes sense sinc...

The house is also seen in "The Cat and the Fiddle"!
