TO THE BATPOLES #145: “Batman: The Movie”: What is “the director’s input”?
https://deconstructingcomics.com/Batpoles/duoatdocks.jpg Director Leslie Martinson, in his TV Academy interview that we explored last time, kept coming back to the question “What is the director’s input” in a TV show or movie? When he pointed out his input to the famous “bomb” scene in “Batman: The...

TO THE BATPOLES #144: Leslie Martinson: He’s Tha Bomb
https://deconstructingcomics.com/Batpoles/Martinson.jpg Leslie Martinson was the director of “The Penguin Goes Straight”/“Not Yet He Ain’t” and “Batman: The Movie.” He was a good friend of Adam West’s (but thought Burt Ward was “adequate”). As a director, how much impact did he have on the Batman l...

TO THE BATPOLES #143: Jeff Bond talking Bat-movie music? Oh buoy!
https://deconstructingcomics.com/Batpoles/oh-buoy.jpg Nelson Riddle’s score for Batman, including the 1966 film Batman: The Motion Picture, features energetic, swing-influenced cues that adhere to the action like a Carl Stalling Looney Tunes score, and opera-esque motifs for each villain and each B...

Re: TO THE BATPOLES #142: Fine-Tuning "The Penguin Goes Straight"
Another instance of impish Batman: When Alfred waylays Joker on the batpole steam lift in Flop Goes the Joker, pinning him to the ceiling of the pole alcove, the distraught crook crows that he can’t breathe. Batman suggests that Alfred “give him some more breathing room,” and sends Joker plummeting...

Re: TO THE BATPOLES #142: Fine-Tuning "The Penguin Goes Straight"
As much as there is to love about the GH crossover, imagine how that arc would have played if the Batman series still had the tone of episodes like this one, or the False Face or 1st Mr. Freeze episodes... ...or even The Joker is Wild! ooh, the mind boggles! It could have been a legitimately exciti...

TO THE BATPOLES #142: Fine-Tuning "The Penguin Goes Straight"
https://deconstructingcomics.com/Batpoles/finetune-penguingoesstraight.jpg When you see a script marked “FINAL,” you probably assume that it’s word-for-word the same as what was shot. In the case of “The Penguin Goes Straight”/“Not Yet He Ain’t”, it’s not even the final script! It was followed by a...

Indeed!
Now I'm preparing for the show. We're planning to talk to Jeff Bond this Friday morning US time. Any questions about the '66 movie score you'd like us to ask him?

Re: OFFICIAL BATMUSIC THREAD ADD TO IT WHEN YOU WILL
For TO THE BATPOLES podcast, we're planning to have Jeff Bond on the show to talk about the '66 movie soundtrack. I knew he had written liner notes for the CD, but I ended up buying the wrong one -- the Lala Land version with John Takis' liner notes. Would anyone be able to send a scan of his notes?

Re: The Purr-Fect Crime - Who Played Bonnie?
Looking at the American Heritage Center's holdings online, they only have call sheets back to July 14, 1966. In other words, they appear to have no season one call sheets at all. So, unfortunately, this woman's identity might be an unsolvable mystery.

TO THE BATPOLES #140 Julie and Eartha: Two Cat-egories of Catwoman
https://deconstructingcomics.com/Batpoles/julieandeartha.jpg Julie Newmar appeared as Catwoman in six two-parters during the first two seasons of Batman. During that time, the show and her character evolved, and while some might not agree with the direction they took, it’s hard to deny that Julie d...
