Re: Batman 80th Anniversary Merchandise Coming Soon

Thought I'd start a thread for non 66 Batman related products coming out this year with the 80th anniversary. First up is this really nice Bendable figure from the fine folks at NJ Croce. I've a soft spot for bendies for some reason, and this one is posed and carded beautifully; https://cdn7.bigcom...

Re: Guess What I’m Getting for Christmas! - The Green Hornet Serials!!

Be sure to post your thoughts on those serials too-- or you might have to have someone writing for you-- after those three serials you might lose some major motor skills-- just temporarily. I'm with Sprang-- Atom Man is better than Superman-- because of Luthor. Alyn made for an interesting Superman...

Re: Guess What I’m Getting for Christmas! - The Green Hornet Serials!!

I think you'll enjoy the Superman serials, they're goofy fun. I did find the first serial's "Spider Lady" an underwhelming villain, but Lyle Talbot's Lex Luthor makes up for it in the sequel (when Talbot showed up as Commissioner Gordon in the second Batman serial, I wanted to yell, "Don't trust hi...

Re: Guess What I’m Getting for Christmas! - The Green Hornet Serials!!

Vader is much more influenced by The Lightning from the serial FIGHTING DEVIL DOGS. https://ic.pics.livejournal.com/dochermes/34340054/2270232/2270232_600.jpg Be interested to see what you think of the follow up, STRIKES AGAIN. I just re-watched it and I really enjoyed it. Hey AndyFish! I completed...

Re: Guess What I’m Getting for Christmas! - The Green Hornet Serials!!

There's been tons of books written about every possible aspect of Star Wars, obviously, but if you're interested in a digestible overview of the series' various inspirations, both thematically, structurally and design-wise, I'd recommend Mary Henderson's "Star Wars: The Magic Of Myth." It goes into...

Re: Guess What I’m Getting for Christmas! - The Green Hornet Serials!!

Lucas wanted to do a Flash Gordon movie but couldn't get the rights, so he came up with "Star Wars," which is close enough (and no need to split the profits with King Features!). Check out the "princess hair." https://static1.squarespace.com/static/4f209325d09a4f024c85b060/t/5122e4f3e4b0cbd2cf2cc5f...

Observations

Is it me or does this look familiar?

It looks like George Lucas spent some time watching this! I recall, he loved serials, but I didn’t realize how much they obviously influenced Star Wars.

I realize a lot of serials did title crawls but that along with the guy in the mask...wow.

Re: Guess What I’m Getting for Christmas!

Actually, radio influenced that too but in a different way. Bud Collyer, the voice of Clark/ Superman did both voices and used that trick on the radio Superman show so that the audiences could "see" in their mind, Clark's change into the man of steel. That trick, of changing voices or over emphasiz...

Re: Guess What I’m Getting for Christmas!

Frenchy, that wasn't Jones changing his voice but instead a voice over by Al Hodge, the voice of the GH on radio. They felt Jones' voice wasn't commanding enough so Hodge stepped in to fill in the Hornet's voice, an easy task as his face was obscured by the mask. Well, that explains it! I wonder if...

You got that right! She had a little something to bring to the show, no doubt!

Re: Guess What I’m Getting for Christmas!

As a life long fan of all serials I think it's important to note they are not designed for binge watching. They wear out their welcome quickly with the recaps. You should try sticking to either an episode a day or even better one a week-- that's how they were made to be seen. On the Hornet Serials,...

Sorry to say she passed away at the young age of 50 in July 1966. Yes, I read that a few days ago... liver cancer. I think they’ve all passed away by now. If I remember correctly, the poor lady had an appendectomy in ‘37 which left her unable to have children, too. Coincidentally, my Dad’s appendix...

Re: Guess What I’m Getting for Christmas!

It seems “binge watching” is popular nowadays. No, not Game of Thrones, not Breaking Bad, The Green Hornet movie serials! Yeah, old school! Well, I sort of feel like I am watching ghosts because everybody in those serials...well, let’s do the math. If the actors were, say, 20 in 1940, that means the...
