If it makes you feel any better, the original tights were 100% nylon and did have a slight sheen to them. They were not dead matte.

Hey Brian, No clue on what they did to mount the knob but it sounds like you've got it figured to me. The hinges are fairly stiff moving, so the binding of the metal on metal is more than likely the culprit. If one got a little tweaked off center, that would also cause binding. The fabric seriously impedes the kind of heat needed to reshape a fiberglass and resin cowl.

If it's vacuform plastic you may have better luck with a hair dryer and patience but fabric damage can happen in a split second.
