Re: TO THE BATPOLES #173: Batman ’65: Developing the Idea
Regarding the question of why the producers would have approached Eric Ambler to write the pilot, check out these comments from Fox TV executive William Self, who attended an early meeting with ABC executives to first discuss a possible Batman series: “I know how to do it, I know what will make it w...

Re: TO THE BATPOLES #172: “Mr Zero”: A Dozier/Semple dead end
The "Mr. Zero" project got a handful of mentions in the press during September and October of '66, the most significant being this item in Variety on 9/14/66: "CBS-TV has made a development deal with William Dozier's Greenway Productions and 20th Century Fox on a new series project, '...

Here's another Februay '67 mention of the Ward script, though this one says the script "may be used next year":

Burt Ward's script "The Exploits of Dr. Voodoo"?
I recently came across an interview with Burt Ward that ran in the newspaper The Morning Sun (Allentown, PA) on April 17, 1966, which includes this claim: "Burt has written a script himself, 'The Exploits of Dr. Voodoo,' which he hopes will be filmed for the series in the near future." Alm...

Re: Who bought TV rights, networks or studios?
I think Gram must have been mistaken - it was NBC who bought the "Dick Tracy" rights ("The Green Hornet" was on ABC.)

Re: Who bought TV rights, networks or studios?
It just occurred to me that Henry Saperstein, one of the parties involved in the NBC/Dozier "Dick Tracy" acquisition deal, also had a working relationship with Toho Studios of Japan...suggesting the possibility that Saperstein could have also served as an intermediary between Dozier and To...

Re: Who bought TV rights, networks or studios?
I'm researching William Dozier's DICK TRACY pilot. Some sources say NBC bought the rights to the character, other sources say 20th Century Fox-Greenway bought the rights. I'm not sure which to believe. This item from the July 4 '66 issue of the trade publication Broadcasting somehow manages to say ...

On-set report by Dwight Newton (Dec. 23 '65)
Apologies in advance if this clipping has already been seen around these parts; TV columnist Dwight Newton visited the set during the shooting of the first "Mr. Freeze" episode, and his report was fairly interesting (don't think I'd ever heard before that Maurice Evans turned down the part...

Re: References to sponsors in Black Widow arc?
One minor quibble: according to the "Black Widow" script, it's "Larva Drive" rather than "Lava Drive."

Re: Repeat henchmen?
Joe Tata was a henchman in "Ring of Wax," "Hizzonner the Penguin," and "I'll Be a Mummy's Uncle." Gil Perkins, a stuntman who appeared in KING KONG (1933) and FRANKENSTEIN MEETS THE WOLFMAN (1943), was a henchman in "The Joker is Wild," "The Thirteenth Ha...

Batman / Lost in Space - rivalry in-joke?
William Dozier is on record as stating that he introduced three-part episodes on BATMAN specifically to try to counter-program against his show's Wednesday night Nielsen rival LOST IN SPACE. And funnily enough, in the three-parter "Penguin is a Girl's Best Friend" we're treated to a scene ...

Re: Episode Production Order
Although it was budgeted as a six day shoot, Tues 23rd August was technically the eighth day of Ma Parker and appears to be pickups with the principal cast. Interesting - thanks for the info. I wish we knew more about how close the Robert Morley version of "Sandman" came to shooting, and ...
