Happy Birthday to Roddy McDowall

Post by Catfan »

Eighty-four years ago today, Roddy McDowall was born in London, UK, the son of a Merchant Marine and his wife. Starting as a child actor some 70-something years ago, he went on to play Bookworm on Batman in early 1966. Sadly, we lost him to cancer in October 1998, but he sure left behind a very large body of work that includes movies from the Planet of the Apes franchise, as well as his role in the 1992 Batman animated series. And he was a real gentleman as well.

Many happy returns, Mr. McDowall!! You are missed!!

He was a good actor. Speaking of his work on the "Planet of the Apes" movies and TV series, he did a great job of facial expressions while he was wearing the makeup. He was to "Apes" as Boris Karloff was to some of the Universal horror movies of the 1930's like "Frankenstein".

Aww man, I just realized it's too bad Cornelius the Chimpanzee didn't do a window-opening guest shot! He could've popped out after Batman and Robin had just passed over with his mouth slightly opening and closing in awe and then, looking at the camera, twitched his nose and said,"Hmmm... And I thought a talking astronaut was strange...." Closes window.

Happy Belated Birthday and happy wishes, Roddy, wherever you may be.
"Hmmm... I don't like the twist this joke is taking. Let us away! Let us away!"

One of the most under-rated character actors of our time. Sorely missed.

Now THAT would have been a great window cameo!

What about the Big Four, as themselves, not their characters, doing a window cameo?

Any of them would be good, but I think that Julie would have been great.
