Most Dramatic Moment

Post by clavierankh »

Batman occasionally had drama. Molly's death in the pilot comes to mind. Also the times Catwoman appeared to die. For me I think one of the most dramatic was in "The Bookworm Turns" when Batman swears by his oath as crime fighter to avenge commissioner Gordon's death. Until the commissioner's reappearance the episode is unusually dramatic.

The end of Batman Displays His Knowledge. Catwoman is trying to get away in the Batmobile but the engine that won't start. Batman Leaps into the car and says "Going My Way."
To me that is the sad end of the relation between the two. (To me Eartha Kitt's Catwoman is something else all together.)

clavierankh,

I agree with all those examples. I especially found it dramatic when the "lookalike" Commissioner Gordon was "seen" shot off the bridge. Another instance that I thought was a somewhat dramatic situation when I first saw it, was the scene in which Bruce and Dick "fake" their own deaths in order to find out if Chandell would propose to Aunt Harriet. I found that scene to be a sudden surprise, and I wondered how could they do that to poor Aunt Harriet? That wasn't it a little harsh to make her think they were both dead? So that's why I found that instance to be slightly dramatic.

When I was a little boy, ALL of the cliff-hangers were dramatic! Would Batman and Robin live? HOW?? I could hardly wait for the next night, or in the cases of the two three-parters, the next WEEK. ;)

They also did that in a Penguin episode. It was revealed later that Batman got the police department to pretend to pursue the duo and fire thousands of rounds of blanks at them, making it look as if they were machine-gunned down. They also faked their own deaths during Mad Hatter's second episode when he tried to X-ray them.

As a kid, I was terrified the first time I saw Penguin's Nest when they were pinned behind the bat shield, and in Hot off the Griddle when Catwoman captured and shot them with poison darts at the History Museum. I had no idea of the humor back then, no idea what "D'Artagnan" meant.

How about the end of "A Death Worse Than Fate" when Zelda, surrendering herself to Batman, begins to silently cry- Robin accuses her of using fake glycerine tears again, but Batman puts the tear to his nose (what do tears smell like?) and tells him they're real.

In the epilogue, prisoner Zelda gives a flower to Bruce Wayne and begs him to give the flower to Batman if he should ever see him. He promises her he would and as she is escorted away by the prison guard (in an unusually moody shot of the surrealistic prison corridor set) puts the flower in his own lapel and exits the shot with a slightly devilish smirk on his face.

I was shocked when commissioner Gordon appeared to be shot and killed. Even though it was faked, it made me both angry and upset that something so terrible had happened on a show tinged with outrageous humor. Some things are just not funny.

I completely forgot about that. That was a dramatic moment. When I first saw it I thought it really happened (or at the very least I was afraid it had happened) and I found it very sad.

As far as the fake shooting of Commissioner Gordon in the Bookworm episode goes, a mere 2 1/2 years earlier the nation was shocked by the assassination of it's President. I'm sure it hit a sensitive spot for many who watched that episode back in the spring of '66.

Two for me:

1. The classic unmasking dilemma in The Joker is Wild

Joker a fingertip away from ultimately defeating his 'anonymous nemesis' before Batman got that shot at the water pipe away

2. When Barbara Gordon leaves her suitcase by the roadside in the Londinium trilogy and both Batman and Robin find it and nearly discover her secret

Would it have hurt them to find out who she really was and for her to find out who they really were ;)

Batman could be a much more dramatic show than its given credit for.

To me the most dramatic moment was Catwoman hanging on the edge of the bottomless pit, she slips, and that scream when she falls. Coupled with Robin looking to be near tears as he shouts after her.

Molly falling into the atomic pile as Batman tries to save her is a close second.

One I didn't notice anyone else mention was the way Batman gasped "False Face..." before he blacks out.

In that same episode, you had Blaze (aka the stunt woman) jump from Gordon's window from an unnerving height.

Zelda the Great with the kidnapping of Aunt Harriet and her plight. Those two episodes were off the wall. And the way Batman single handedly and brutally beat up and captured the Riddler and his gang because they were going to snap Robin in two.

Well as a kid when I first saw the Bookworm episodes as mentioned above, where it appeared the Commissioner had been murdered was a total shock!

In "Catwoman's Dressed to kill" you was always wondering are they going to save Batgirl or go after Catwoman, that was quite dramatic.

Also in the "Riddlers False Notion" you had Robin looking like he was getting sworn in half by the Riddler.
