Maybe casting older for the beauty queen role was a conscious decision by producers. Having an old letch like Freeze keeping a 21 year old in a cage would have been REALLY creepy!

But then again, perhaps Dee was dating one of the producers at the time and...well... :D
The photo below is from Dee's Wikipedia page.

Interestingly, Dee was married to producer Howard Hawks from 1953-59, then later appeared in his 1965 film, Red Line 7000. That film also had Gail Hire, who played Egghead's note-taking secretary in his first appearance.

The fact that Groucho was one of the main investors in Irwin Allen's production company undoubtedly got her roles not only on Lost in Space, but Time Tunnel and Land of the Giants as well. Given the fact that LIS and Batman used a lot of the same props, I'm sure her name came up at some point.

When I first saw this episode a long time ago, I hated that gossip columnist and really hoped she would get her comeuppance. Or at least forced to apologize to Batman.

But when I saw it again recently, after many years and wider experience of movie viewing, all I could think of was "wow, that's the great Marie Windsor".

I think even when I first remember seeing it in the late 70's, I sort of realized this was an actress with quite a bit of gravity. And seeing it now she was still very attractive, and she was playing her part a bit flirty. This was one of the bits that made this seem more like a first season episode. And I remember in Adam's book he mentioned he was thrilled to find himself doing a scene with her. And similarly with Robert Cornthwaite as "Allan A Dale" in the Archer episode, who he had remembered from the old sci-fi film "The Thing". He must have liked it as a kid. Oddly, Marie Winsor was in a movie called, "Cat-Women of the Moon"! But she wasn't a catwoman.

Dee Hartford shot a Time Tunnel episode in August 1966, and 'Green Ice' went before the cameras on Sept. 23. With both shows being Fox productions, I'm sure the folks at Greenway were aware of her Time Tunnel appearance.

And it is a very similar role. In the episode titled 'Revenge of the Gods,' Hartford played Helen of Troy, kidnapped from Sparta by Trojan prince Paris. Their dialogue is VERY reminiscent of that between Miss Iceland and Mr. Freeze. A lot of 'you WILL love me'/'I will NEVER love you,' etc, etc.

I will say while I realize Dee was too old to be playing a beauty pageant contestant, she still was gorgeous. I wish the actual plot had been more like some of those promo stills such as the one above in this thread, in which Freeze and Miss Iceland's relationship seems a lot less, uh, frosty. How about if the extreme cold somehow brainwashed Miss Iceland into becoming Freeze's willing henchmoll? Would have been more interesting than the ultra-repetitive dialogue we got.

That's very interesting! The entire Time Tunnel episode is available on hula and dailymotion -- I definitely want to watch it. I see your point totally, but if Miss Iceland had "turned" we'd have missed the incredibly creepy scene of "Dee Hartford" trapped in a block of ice! Seeing it as a kid, that one stuck with me. And it was fitting with Mr. Freeze's (Preminger could definitely play cruel) cruelty. Dee Hartford was certainly not an A-list actress, but she leaves an impression.

I agree the block of ice thing freaked me out as a kid, along with Dee slowly and robotically saying, 'Baaaatttmmmaaannnn.'

Stanley Kubrick's excellent heist caper, The Killing (1956), pairs Marie Windsor and Elisha Cook Jr. as an ill-matched married couple. The first time I saw it, in the early 2000s, I knew both Windsor and Cook were film noir veterans, but watching their first scene together, I still kept thinking about how both would eventually cross paths with Mr. Freeze. (Cook, of course, played Prof. Isaacson in the Eli Wallach episodes, "Wilmer the gunsel" in The Maltese Falcon, and scads of other character parts in movies and TV.)

Cheers,

In Richard Fleischer's classic film noir The Narrow Margin (1952), Ms Windsor spends most of the film cast to type playing a flint-hearted mobster's widow being escorted to testify before a grand jury; only for it to be eventually revealed that all along she had been policewoman acting as a decoy for the real widow...!

That's right, and if I'm not mistaken they were reunited in 1979's Salem's Lot. Marie played the landlord of the house where David Soul stayed, and Elisha was her drunken husband who lived in the streets.

Watching parts of "The Thirteenth Hat" last night, has anyone noticed the sign above the doorway in the Mad Hatter's hideout with words to the effect of:

HAT FACTORY
Enter At Your Own Risk

I could only spot it at the very edge of certain shots.

The attention to detail in these never fails to amaze me.

I just noticed in the third season episode PENGUIN'S CLEAN SWEEP that Batman calls Commissioner Gordon on a landline black phone to discuss the Penguin issue but Commissioner Gordon is talking to Batman on the red phone in his office. Batman dials the Commissioner's phone number directly so Gordon should have been talking to him on the black phone, not the red phone.

Which then begs the question: What was the Batphone number?

In the very first episode, Batman gets a call on the Batmobile - and it's the Riddler with a riddle.

Yet in part two, Riddler asks Robin to call Gordon to contact Batman on the hotline. So how did he get through in part one?

While we are at it, just how long did the Riddler sit there waving his lighter in front of Mr Peale's face waiting for Batman to show up?

(The last question isn't a fault of the TV series, as I believe this was lifted straight from the comic).

As I get deeper into second season the episodes seem to be improving. But yet a few flaws...

In the Shame episode Dozier mentions in the opening narration that there are 400,000 fans crammed into the stadium to watch the Gotham 100. But later Gordon mentions that Shame stole the valuable race care in front of 800,000 fans. Wow, the crowd doubled in only a few minutes! Ha ha.

In the "Bird's Last Jest" episode, as Batman and Robin are speaking behind the Bat Shield you can see the backwards lettering reflected in the shield that spell out STAGE 3-5 (or something like that). It must've been reflecting the signage on the studio lot. As they move it around you can also see the reflection of a ladder, probably used by the lighting guys.

Fun stuff!
