I figured that at that time, the vast majority of households would have had black and white TVs. I've always felt the black and white episodes of the Grey Ghost were a nice touch (an episode of Batman: the Animated Series that guest stars Adam West and is kind of a tribute to the sacrifices he made in his career for his involvement in Batman, a must watch if you haven't already seen it).
