Catwoman story - Parts Thirty-One to Thirty-Three (the end)

Post by dell »

Part One: The Return

The urge to steal something finally overwhelmed her. In the small room on the second floor of the dormitory she quietly slipped into her catsuit. The mask, ears, boots and necklace quickly followed. She turned off the lights in her room and then cracked open the door. A quick scan of the hallway confirmed that no one else was awake at this late hour. She glided down the hallway and entered the emergency stairwell. Seconds later she was outside and headed for the parking lot.

It was a perfect night for her crime. The air was deathly still so that she could hear anything that moved. The moon was just a sliver and barely cast any light over the darkened parking lot. It would be another day or two before the maintenance crew fixed the parking lot lights that she had disabled earlier in the week. Using her superb night vision she had no trouble finding her way to the car, a late model Catillac.

The drive to the jewelry store only took 5 minutes. She parked in the alley behind the store, well away from any streetlights. Being the world’s leading cat burglar she disarmed the alarms and was inside the store in less time that it took her to drive there. She had been in the store two weeks earlier and knew exactly which display case held the items she desired.

She flexed her hands inside the wonderful gloves that she hadn’t worn in months. She smiled as he thought of the special glass cutting stone imbedded in the claw on her right index finger. The stone would make short work of the bulletproof glass of the case.

Just then a Gotham City police car drove by and shone its spotlight into the store. The spotlight danced off her lurex catsuit and caused her to smile. The car, as she knew it would, simply drove on without stopping. The store was filled with glass display cases and shiny baubles, so everything reflected the spotlight. A costume that didn’t reflect the light would have certainly caught the attention of the police, but her catsuit simply fitted in and caused no suspicion.

She glided across the floor towards the jewelry case. She placed her gloved hands on the glass and then she stood motionless. Nothing had triggered her keen senses to put her on alert; rather she paused to savor the moment. In a few moments the three pendants would be in her paws, but more importantly… Batman would know that Catwoman had returned to Gotham City!

Part Two: A Call for Help

The Commissioner picked up the Batphone and pushed the button. Seconds later that familiar English accent greeted him, “I’ll get him at once Commissioner.”

Alfred stepped into the living room and discreetly whispered to Bruce Wayne, “It’s the Batphone sir.”

Bruce stood up and called to his young ward, “Dick, Alfred has spotted an Orange-Throated Warbler from the window in my study. We should hurry if we hope to see it.”

Aunt Harriett didn’t even look up from her knitting as the two men raced from the room. She simply shook her head and proclaimed, “You men and your bird watching.”

Bruce dashed to the phone and snatched the receiver from its cradle, “Yes Commissioner!”

“I hate to bother you yet again Batman as it was only a minor theft. But it looked like a professional job and I thought you would want to know about it.”

“No theft is too small when a good citizen of Gotham City has been robbed!”

“Well said Batman.”

“We’ll be there shortly Commissioner.”

Bruce hangs up the phone and momentarily stares off into the distance lost in thought. Dick pulls open the Shakespeare bust and turns the switch. As the door slides open Bruce is pulled back to the present and exclaims, “To the Batpoles!” The duo race to the hidden poles that will take them to the Batcave.

Whereas Bruce and Dick began the descent into the Batcave, it’s Batman and Robin who land on the pads at the bottom of the poles. They race to the Batmobile, jump into their seats, secure their safety Batbelts, and roar out of the Batcave prepared yet again to face danger in order to protect the citizens of Gotham City.

A short while later the Batmobile screeches to a halt outside of Gotham City Police Headquarters. Batman and Robin quickly make their way to Commissioner Gordon’s office.

Is it really? I just made it up as it seemed like something that was in the style of the show. Which episode?

I actually had Alfred mention that they should hurry as a neighbor had mentioned a cat had been spotted in the neighborhood, but then I took out all mention of cats in a rewrite. Right now Batman and Robin do not know who is behind the crime.

No episode, but it's in the same style of how the original would be, similar to Bruce & Dick enjoying milk & cookies from Aunt Harriet. Good Job.

Part Three: A Dreadful Realization

Upon entering the office Batman sees the Commissioner talking to a well dressed gentleman. The commissioner breaks into a giant smile as he sees Batman and quickly begins the introductions. “Batman, I’d like to introduce Ernesto Gato, the proprietor of Gato and Nephews Fine Jewelry Emporium. His store is located in the Little Mexico area of Gotham City.”

Batman turns to the distinguished store owner and shake his hand, “It’s a pleasure to meet you sir; I only wish it was under better circumstances.”

“The pleasure is all mine Signor Batman. It is a great honor to meet you.”

“Thank you Signor Gato. Now, if you could tell us about the theft.”

“Of course Signor Batman, of course. The theft was small and almost not worth the bother of reporting it. Insurance rates you now. But I felt it was my civic duty to inform the police of such a crime. The thief disabled two separate alarm systems and then entered the back door. They somehow cut through bulletproof glass and stole just three small pendants from a case containing thousands of dollars of fine jewelry. The pendants weren’t even worth very much money. I don’t know why they took those three items and left many other fine pieces. I am grateful that they only took those three, but it is very puzzling, is it not Signor Batman?”

Batman quietly agrees, “Very puzzling indeed; its almost as if the criminal was playing a joke on us.” The Commissioner turned white at the inference that the Joker may have them behind the crime. Batman continued, “or possibly trying to confuse us with an obscure riddle.” Chief O’Hara blanched at the possibility that the Riddler might be back.

And then Robin added, “it seems rather fishy to me.” The other crime fighters knew he was referring to the Penguin.

Batman ponders the situation for a few seconds and then asks Signor Gato, “Was there anything special about these pendants?”

“No, no Signor Batman; they were rather small, and to be honest, unremarkable. The only thing that made them unique, was that they were the only three items in my entire store that were associated with my name.”

Batman looks puzzled and says, “I’m afraid I don’t understand.”

“The three pennants, they all depicted gatos. I believe in English you would say cats.”

The four crimefighters gasped at Signor Gatos last few words.

“Holy cat burglary!”

“Mother McCree! You donneh suppose?!?”

“As Police Commissioner I had hoped we’d heard the last from that foul feline predator!”

Batman turned to the perplexed store owner and quickly shakes his hand. “Thank you Signor Gato, you’ve been most helpful. If we have any further questions a police officer will come around to your store to ask you or your nephews for more information.” And then Batman hurriedly escorted the man out the door.

The other men in the office all look at Batman askance. “Holy bum’s rush Batman, why did you get rid of Signor Gato so quickly?”

“I didn’t want to discuss the possibility that Catwoman had returned. Revealing to him that Catwoman is on the prowl would only create panic in the business community. I think it’s best that we keep Catwoman’s return under wraps until we’re in position to stop her. And at the moment we haven’t got a single lead as to why she committed this crime or where she’s set up her lair. I’m afraid we’ll have to wait until she makes her next move before we pounce.”

Commissioner Gordon nods his head in agreement, “I heartily agree Batman. Men like Signor Gato have enough to worry about without adding the threat of an arch criminal waiting to steal their hard earned profits. And I was about to let the cat of the bag… as it were.”

“Me too ”, added Robin.

Chief O’Hara shook his head and added dejectedly, “It seems like’n you’re always two steps ahead of us Batman.”

Batman responds, “It would be better if I were two steps ahead of Catwoman!”

The Commissioner replies, “How very true Batman, how very true.”

The Caped Crusader turns to the Commissioner and asks, “Do you have the most recent status of our feline foe Commissioner?”

“My secretary Bonnie brought me the quarterly Arch Criminal Parole Status Report a few minutes before I called you Batman. I’m afraid I haven’t had a chance to read it yet.” The Commissioner picks up the report and pages through it. He stops on page six and begins reading: “Paroled convict: Catwoman. Released three months ago. Check in with parole officer required once a week. Check ins completed on schedule: 2. Missed check ins: 10. Current whereabouts: unknown. Parole status: violated.” The Commissioner throws down the report in disgust. “She’s had almost three months to plan her latest crime spree. I fear this could be a dire time for Gotham City.”

Batman turns to his old friend, “Not if Robin and I have anything to say about it Commissioner! I think it’s time for the two of us return to the Batcave and ponder our next moves. There may be a pattern in her previous crime sprees that could predict what she’s up to. We don’t have a moment to lose!” The Dynamic Duo then rush from the office.

So I think this will be the last part of the story that I post for a little while. I have four more parts already completed, but it's time to slow down so I can map out the rest of the story and keep everything on track.

So far everything I've written has been consistent with the television show, but now I'm deviating just a little bit. I needed to give Catwoman an alter ego for this part of the story so I chose Selena Kyle. In this section of my story you also get a hint of what Catwoman is planning. I hope you're enjoying it so far.

Part Four: The Academy

The Marie Antoinette Academy for Recalcitrant Girls had never had a physical education teacher quite like Selena Kyle. The puritanical leaders of the school believed that physical fitness was a key component to instilling good morals and good citizenship in their students. And three months earlier when Selena Kyle arrived to interview for the job she seemed like a perfect candidate.

The men who interviewed her for the position were simply overwhelmed by her physical beauty and charm. Within minutes of meeting her every man was convinced she was the person to hire. At first, most of the women felt intimidated by her and had no desire to work alongside the tall, imposing beauty. Most of them also quickly succumbed to her enchanting smile and bubbly charisma. And for those women she couldn’t charm, Selena simply intimidated them with bone-crushing handshakes and powerful stares. By the end of the interviews every one on the staff at the academy agreed that Selena Kyle was the perfect role model for the girls at the academy. She embodied everything that they wanted for their young charges: physical fitness, poise, confidence and beauty. She was hired that very day.

Two weeks after she was hired students began to arrive at the academy for the beginning of the school year. Selena Kyle wasted no time imposing her physical fitness regimen on the students. The girls were shocked to learn they had to be up at 6:00 AM every day for a 3 mile run. After two weeks the run was increased to 4 miles… Two weeks later they were running 5 miles every morning. And Selena Kyle was always out front setting a blistering pace. And this was in addition to the 60 minutes of physical education class each student attended every day. In class the girls did pushups, pull-ups, calisthenics, field hockey, learned self defense and even how to box.

And the school leaders couldn’t have been happier with Selena Kyle and the progress she was making in improving the health of the girls. Little did they know that everything the beautiful Miss Kyle was doing with the girls was, as always with Selena Kyle, for her own gain. The intense physical training and the fighting skills served only one purpose; to allow her to determine which of these girls had the physical stamina, agility and fighting skills that would allow them to serve as Catwoman’s protégés.

I just wrote the ending and its good if I do say so myself. Now I just need to finish writing the in between bits. Just in case you're wondering, this will probably be about 20 parts. I think I've gotten it all mapped out now, so I just need to write it.

This goes against my self-imposed rule of staying at least four chapters ahead, but I'm in a good mood after writing the ending so here's part five.

Part Five: Recruiting Her Gang

Selena had studied the girls carefully and narrowed the list down to five potential candidates. One more test would determine which of these girls would join her and which would be left aside.

The day after she had stolen the pendants from Gato and Nephews Fine Jewelry Emporium she put the five girls to the test. One by one the five candidates were called to her office where they were told they were to be punished for some infraction of the rules. When the students arrived they always found that Miss Kyle was absent from her office, but something very tempting was placed carefully on her desk. For the girls with money problems, Selena left $50.00 in plain view. For the girls who struggled academically, a copy of next week’s test was left on the desk.

Sadly, her primary candidate prove to be disgustingly honest. She knew Jane and her family struggled to pay the tuition to the school, but the girl never even looked twice at the cash. After 10 minutes of watching through the one way mirror Selena reluctantly returned to her office, assigned the girl a harsh punishment for some made up infraction and rudely dismissed her.

However, her second candidate proved to be a good selection. She again watched behind the one way mirror as Cassandra stood next to her desk. The girl kept eying the money, we begin to reach for it and then pull her hand back. After 5 minutes though, the temptation proved too much. Cassandra clumsily grabbed the money and shoved it into her pocket. Moments later Selena Kyle walked into the office and confronted the girl; and a few minutes later she had her first enthusiastic recruit.

The third girl, Donna, proved as equally enthusiastic to join Catwoman’s gang after being caught stealing the answers to next week’s test.

The fourth and fifth girls were a mixed bag. The fourth girl, Katie, proved as disgustingly honest as her first choice and refused to steal the money. After watching her for an agonizing 10 minutes Selena finally gave up and returned to her office. The girl was assigned a harsh punishment for some made up infraction and then rudely dismissed.

However, the fifth girl, Catwoman’s least favorable selection, surprised her. Brenda deftly snatched the money off the desk seconds after entering the office. The theft happened so quickly Selena Kyle almost missed it. She was about to head to her office and recruit the girl when something unexpected happened. Brenda had spotted the test used to tempt Donna and quickly recorded the answers. “This one’s good”, Selena whispered to herself.

Selena returned to her office and confronted Brenda. “You’re an excellent student, why did you steal the test answers?”

The girl returned Selena’s penetrating gaze and calmly replied, “I was going to sell them to some of the other girls.” Selena smiled and made the offer to join her gang or be expelled for theft as well as cheating. Brenda accepted the offer without hesitation.

Acceptance into Catwoman’s gang required the girls to attend nightly courses on breaking and entering, disabling alarm systems, lock picking, safe cracking, and many other criminal activities necessary for an aspiring cat burglar. All three of the girls were quick and eager learners for Catwoman’s sinful schoolwork.
