What all is there of the 60's Batman Series?

Post by adventuremaster18 » Wed Apr 25, 2018 9:08 am

Hello, this is my first post on this forum. About last year, I fell in love with the 60s Batman series, it was very fun and quite charming. My question is what all is there of the 60's Batman show? I have the series itself, the original movie, and the 2 animated films. But I was curious about the rest. I got most of the comics, but I'm not sure if it's all of it, is there a list of them? Also, which animated series did Adam voice Batman in? I know he cameoed as other characters, such as the grey ghost on Batman the Animated Series, but I mean as Batman himself, not counting brief parody appearances, such as the Simpsons. Has the Green Hornet been officially released anywhere? Or is there any obscure stuff, such as ads like the recently resurfaced Crossing Safety Ad? Sorry if I'm asking so many questions, I just wanna make sure I have everything.

Lastly, should I even bother trying to get Legends of the Superheroes?

Great roundup, Ben!

A couple of additions:
  • CBC "Periscope" documentary about the Batman series (online)
  • Interview with Batman movie cast members (Adam, Cesar, Lee) and William Dozier prior to the film premiere event in Austin TX, with local newscaster Jean Boone (online)
These may be included in Holy Batmania, but they are also available online:
  • ABC 1966 fall TV-season preview, hosted by Adam and Burt as Batman and Robin
  • U.S. Savings Bonds PSA by Adam as Batman
And I know @adventuremaster18 specifically asked about Adam in the role, but I'd include the 1974 pay-equality PSA with Yvonne and Burt (and Dick Gautier as Batman) as a legit outgrowth of the 60s Batman show.

P.S. @alfredthebutler, Ben included the road safety ad in his list, as "Kerb Drill."

Great job listing guys. Quite a bit of stuff out there.

Roast of the Superheroes is included in the Legends of the Superheroes DVD-R from Warner Archives.
It's arguably worse than Legends which in of itself is bad.
Would I get it? Yup. It's nowhere near as sad as seeing Adam suited up in the early 80s at those car shows where he does his schtick about "have you seen any oddly dressed people around here?" In Legends, which is mind numbingly dumb-- he and Burt both look good in their costumes and there is an element of fun to it, especially if you watch it with a little kid who this is aimed for (I hope).

I agree with Andy on Legends/Roast. If you're a fan of '66 Batman or Super Friends, it's worth watching.

I wasn't aware of it until it showed up on DVD several years ago, but I can say with certainty that I would have treasured it as a child. I would have been keenly aware, even at five-years-old, that it was vastly inferior to the original series, but just seeing Adam and Burt with the Justice League would have been enough.

Since you mentioned the comics, I will add the Batman novel published in 1966-"Batman vs. Three Villains of Doom". There was also a novelization of the movie published in 1966.

There is a treatment written by William Dozier for a proposed 'Batman Vs. Godzilla' film.

There were a bunch of storybook/record combos based on the episodes of the TV show published in Japan during the late 1960's, but of course they are Japanese language.
He flies and fights-BATMAN!
Purity and virtue-BATMAN!
Cowards run away!
Batman saves the day!
Also, Boy Wonder Robin.
Batman and Robin-caped crusaders at night!
BIFF! POW! BAM! BATMAN!

I also have:

The Batman screentest with Adam and Burt, which is online.

The Batgirl pilot/presentation, which is online.

BTS of the pilot episode, which is online.

Home movie footage of the movie premiere, where the cast is in a parade, which is online.

1966 Driving Safety clip, with Adam as Batman in Batmobile.

Silent outtakes with clapboard from a Louie the Lilac episode.

Adam interviewed, not in costume, on set of a King Tut episode.

Adam signing autographs, not on costume, from circa 1966.

There is also footage of Adam and Burt in costume circa 1966 at a personal appearance in the Adam West bio.

Legends and Roast are well worth the watch.
Production values are way down, but still a fun look back at " What we had then".
I just ordered Naked, I can't believe I haven't seen this yet.
Great list, what about the videos online of Adam and Burt, at the car show signing autographs? In costume.

There is an episode of the old "Police Woman" series entitled "Guns", that aired on season 4 in 1977. It briefly shows Adam West. playing a killer, reading a Batman comic book. :) I'd love to get it just to see which issue it was! I saw it when it aired. He looked similar to this, as I recall.

If we're including non-Batman material featuring Adam West, the Lookwell! TV pilot is hilarious, and shares much of the same sensibility of Batman -- i.e., Adam plays a character who's funny because he has no idea how funny he is.

There are also these slim UK publications from World Adventure Library. I was curious to seek out the Egghead issue, since he was original to the TV show. Then I also located Bookworm. The Egghead adventure sees the return of Miss Bacon. His new goons are Fry and Scramble. Pressman, Printer's Devil and Lydia Limpet return with The Bookworm. Haven't found the Archer issue yet (#11), but as the last in the series he might have been in fewer numbers?

I accidentally found "Meet Dr No-Face" (#3) being sold quite cheaply, perhaps because he's original to these digest-size magazines, but so far copies of "Batman... and The Ringer" (issue #1) have been asking $100 on eBay, or a high minimum bid!
