Moore seems to forget that the original Batman comics were nothing like the '66 series. He's essentially using what was a one-off, very divergent adaptation (and ignoring what established the character) lead to his false conclusion. It would be the same as someone saying the cartoon Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends was the best version of the character (as a contrast to the seven live action films produced since 2002), when the cartoon is as far removed from Spider-Man's origin and what made the character as one can imagine, while the films--Sam Raimi's in particular--were about 85% perfect in capturing what the character / comics had been in print.

No, I don't think so. He's said that the 66 version is his favorite and that Batman has left its roots to become more violent. That's not the same thing as saying that the 66 TV show is the only way to represent Batman or that it is the original version.

Moore's own take on Batman, The Killing Joke, features much more graphic violence than the original comic books did. That is the trend in the comics industry that Moore is arguing against here. Recreating family-friendly characters in adult terms seems unpalatable to him, now.

I feel badly for Moore in that DC comics cheated him and Dave Gibbons out of ownership of Watchman. Yes, what they did was legal but unethical.

cheers
