Batman / Lost in Space - rivalry in-joke?

Post by Mr. Glee »

William Dozier is on record as stating that he introduced three-part episodes on BATMAN specifically to try to counter-program against his show's Wednesday night Nielsen rival LOST IN SPACE. And funnily enough, in the three-parter "Penguin is a Girl's Best Friend" we're treated to a scene filmed on the 20th Century back lot, right outside Soundstages 10 and 11. Stage 11 was where the main standing set for LOST IN SPACE was housed.

LOST IN SPACE stars Bill Mumy and Angela Cartwright reportedly attended school on shooting days in a small trailer parked outside the soundstage. I'm guessing the odds are pretty good that would be the same trailer seen above. It amuses me to think that Bill and Angela could have been taking a math test in there when this BATMAN scene was filmed.

Anyway, whether intentional or not, this strikes me as a pretty funny in-joke.

Lost in Space is probably my favorite classic TV show of all time because it worked on so many levels, even when it "devolved" into camp/comedy it was still a fun show. Get Smart, Girl from Uncle, Andy Griffith, Gilligan's Island and of course, Batman are up there but LIS had monsters which is right up my alley.

Hard to say who's posing with who in those photos! Looks like the rivalry didn't extend to the respective shows' cast members. Very cool.
