Other Costume color schemes?

Post by Lou Szabo »

So we’ve seen the screen tests and final costume designs, but does anyone know if they considered other colors for Batman’s Costume? In particular, the cape and cowl. Since they used the lighter blue in the 1960’s vs the dark blue/navy color in the 1950’s cowl and cape.

It looked like the tights/leotard material changed material and color from the screen test to the final. After all, Dorothy’s Silver Slippers changed to Ruby Red due to color filming.

Or, if the did consider another color combo, it didn’t show well in either color or black and white?

Just curious if anyone has any information or insight.

I once saw an essay speculating what Batwoman's costume would look like in real life: ie. yellow with lots of black shadows? Black with yellow highlights?

Wally had extensive conversations with costumer Jan Kemp, I don't know if this ever came up but hopefully he'll chime in because it's a great question.

I have seen the all yellow Batwoman action figure as well as a Cosplay person doing the all yellow Batwoman as well. There is another illustration w/ Batwoman wearing a Yellow unitard with a black strapless swimsuit over it. As far as Batman, himself, I don't have the foggiest idea.

I know that Jan Kemp was limited originally in regards to the cape because he used shot silk and that is woven with two different color threads (Black and blue in this case) and not dyed.
That did not last long.

It looks like he used the same grey on the screen test as was used during the run of the show. Pinky warm grey.

So the takeaway is that for Batman costume, the color scheme was fixed.

From what I've read, Jan Kemp was showing EVERYONE at the top of production the swatches since "In Color" was a big deal for the show.
The silk samples would have been a bracketing factor.

Odds are it was a small sampling of colors so the big wigs can feel part of the process.
That's how it works in the Art Dept.'s I've worked in.
