Batman: Caped Crusader first look photos

Post by rsaffle »

I'm not much for animated movies, which is weird because I'm very much a comic guy, but here are the first images released for the new show.

Amazon Prime Video has released first look photos and announced an August 1st premiere date for the animated series “Batman: Caped Crusader”.
The project is being dubbed a reimagining of the Batman mythology and spiritual successor to the original 1990s “Batman: The Animated Series”.
The show is being spearheaded by filmmakers J.J. Abrams and Matt Reeves along with “Batman: The Animated Series” veteran Bruce Timm who will all executive produce.

Welcome to Gotham City, where the corrupt outnumber the good, criminals run rampant and law-abiding citizens live in a constant state of fear. Forged in the fire of tragedy, wealthy socialite Bruce Wayne becomes something both more and less than human — the BATMAN. His one-man crusade for justice attracts unexpected allies within the GCPD and City Hall, but his heroic actions spawn deadly, unforeseen ramifications.

The photos offer first looks at new interpretations of several character's including Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Harley Quinn, Commissioner Jim Gordon and Clayface.

J.J. Abrams and 'reimagining'... Thanks, that's all I needed to know. Zero interest in this, especially with the continued cheap, cost-cutting animation that seems forever prevalent in all these offerings.

Looks great! Creative team is a bunch of all-stars! Happy to see Timm back, hopefully he takes an active hand in things. Enjoying the more 1930's look to Batman with the short gloves.
He flies and fights-BATMAN!
Purity and virtue-BATMAN!
Cowards run away!
Batman saves the day!
Also, Boy Wonder Robin.
Batman and Robin-caped crusaders at night!
BIFF! POW! BAM! BATMAN!

I'm excited about this, have been since the get go on this project which seems like a looooong time ago now. I adore BTAS, it's my "other" Batman, for sure. I'm remaining optimisitic that Timm's more recent track record is not going to similarly define the shape of this show.

Very intruiged to hear some casting news for this new show. Kevin Conroy's passing is still pretty sore.

Each to their own, but come on, cheap animation is long-time tradition...

Bruce Timm being involved is a good sign. JJ Abrams is not a good sign. I didn't like how he lobotomized Star Trek. To help this show they need to get Paul Dini to write some episodes.

Loved those old Marvel cartoons. Remember watching them on our B&W TV when they were new, sitting on my parents’ bed. They played on the Cincinnati Channel 19 - MetroMedia Television (the independent station) - during “Larry Smith and Puppets.”

🎶”Tony Stark makes you feel he’s a cool Exec with a heart of steel…”🎶 (That’s how I remember it).

Happy childhood memories.

Miss you, Mom and Dad.

Okay, Ben, I will concede that point to you. I do remember in the early '70s my friends and I impatiently waiting to get through the school day so we could race home to watch that cheapo Marvel series that we loved. In the Detroit area I believe it was broadcast on channel 20 at 4 pm which meant I would have to sacrifice the Banana Splits and the Three Stooges over on channel 50. Man, life was tough at times! In any event, I just find now the 'toons aren't as detailed with muscle definition, etc. The backgrounds are always highly detailed, but the characters are very basic in design. You're right about voice actors in terms of missing Kevin Conroy. I find a lot of the voice actors now very generic - much like all the real-life actors that are also generic and interchangeable. Everybody now looks and sounds the same.

I'm actually really excited for this! I love Old Hollywood-era film noir, and it looks like this show is taking more than a few pages from that playbook. It's also interesting to note that apparently this show's characterization of Catwoman is going to be based on Barbara Stanwyck's character in The Lady Eve (1941).

Another point I'll have to concede is the film noir style. I'm a huge fan of the old film noir genre. As for Barbara Stanwyck - now we're talking! 8-) She was before my time, but as far as I'm concerned she was the Queen of Hollywood. She was beautiful, sexy, had her own unique style... She was all that and a bag of chips and she knew it!

DOUBLE INDEMNITY FOREVER! ;)

I'm right there with you, Double Indemnity is hands down my favourite Noir and honestly is probably in my top 5 movies of all time.

All in for Selena Stanwyck!

Harley Quinn is a very different character in this version. You’ve been warned…
I already can't see much of a connection between how Harley is currently portrayed in comics and films and how she started out on B:TAS, so more alterations will just be par for the course, IMO. Honestly I would prefer it if she were left out of this entirely, as she is easily the most overexposed, unappealing and tiresome character in the Batman mythos. When you consider how recent an addition she is compared to most members of the rogue's gallery and supporting cast, it's amazing how much more tired I am of her than any others.

All that said, the images look good from this, especially the Golden Age-type Catwoman and that image of Bruce. It feels like they're inching closer to the Fleischer Superman style that inspired BTAS in the first place, but evolved in a different direction as things went on.

And add me to the ranks of the Stanwyck fan club.
"You were right again, Batman. We might have been killed."
"Or worse."
