SUNDAY, JULY 4, 1971

Post by AHTrois »

Jim Morrison, former frontman of The Doors, died the previous day.

America was in the throes of Her 195th anniversary celebration.

Hogan's Heroes finished its 6-season run on CBS.

And, after an absence of 3 years, the 1966-68 Batman series would be shown again on ABC, this time in the form of its 1966 20th Century Fox motion picture spinoff that had its World Television Premiere on The ABC Sunday Night Movie, immediately following The FBI. While the movie benefitted from a very strong lead-in from the law enforcement television series, viewership was so stellar it was quickly rebroadcast on Labor Day weekend that year.

I remember that day as well. My parents would not take me to the movie in the theater because they were sure the film was edited together with episodes of the show.

Fast forward to July 4, 1971 and we were camping on the Oregon coast with no TV to check out the movie. However, I did watch most of it on Labor Day weekend that year but the film went past 11 pm and my folks insisted that I had to be in bed by 11 o’clock. I was 11 years old.

I had to wait until the movie came out on VHS in the 1980’s until I saw the whole thing. I was able to get Adam West to autograph the videocassette case in 1989.
