World of Wheels: Chattanooga 1987, Atlanta 1989

Post by mwilbury »

My father dug up some photos he took at the World of Wheels auto show in Chattanooga in January of 1987. Though I saw Adam again in ’89, this was the only time I got to see the Dynamic Duo in costume.

I included most of the photos since some of the lesser shots show details of the costumes they were wearing at the time.

Here are some photos my dad took at the Atlanta World of Wheels in 1989. I previously posted one of these photos in another thread, but he found the remaining photos in a dresser drawer.

My brother and I were in the throes of Batmania Part II, so we are both wearing our ’89 Halloween costumes that were created by my very talented mother. A very impressive feat in the pre-internet era. Unfortunately, Burt Ward was not around for this particular appearance.

Fun pics! It always makes me wonder why the cowl was above the the cape in these appearances as in the Legends of the Superheroes. It just looks wierd!

Hey Bob
Wally can tell the story in detail, but essentially this was a real show used cowl that had become weathered from time. A seamstress for the Legends show stripped and recovered it without taking any photos first or using a pattern, so when she redid it she had to approximate the markings and she made the neck too short. It's been dubbed the Gila cowl because of it's appearance similarities to the creature from the black lagoon.

Adam provided the cowl for Legends and took it with him for personal appearances for the next ten years. When he stopped appearing in costume he sold that cowl and started traveling with a repro cowl on a bust beside him, pretty sure it was a Wally cowl.

I asked him why he wore the cowl over the cape at a world of wheels in the late eighties in Chicago. He said it was so he didn't have to take the cape off when going on breaks
