'66 Newspaper Strip Collections by IDW

Post by NJ_Batfan »

Now here is something I've been waiting for!

From IDW's January 2014 solicits:

Batman: The Silver Age Newspaper Comics, Vol. 1: 1966 - 1967
Whitney Ellsworth (w) • Shelly Moldoff, Joe Giella, Carmine Infantino (a) • Pete Poplaski (c)
The Silver Age Caped Crusader comes to IDW's Library of American Comics! In partnership with DC Entertainment, the Eisner and Harvey Award-winning imprint gives the deluxe archival treatment to the classic 1960s Batman newspaper strip. The complete series, which ran from 1966 until 1972, has never been reprinted and will be collected in three definitive volumes.

The strip debuted in May 1966 on the heels of the Batmania craze resulting from the hit television program. The series boasted stories by longtime editor Whitney Ellsworth and art by DC stalwarts Shelly Moldoff, Joe Giella, and Carmine Infantino.

The first volume, reprinting all B&W dailies and color Sundays from 1966 and 1967, features an all-star list of Batman and Robin characters, including Catwoman, the Penguin, the Joker, Poison Ivy, and Batgirl!

Batman was created in 1939 by Bob Kane.

Thanks for the update. I had read earlier in the year that this was coming, but hadn't seen anything in a while, and was beginning to wonder if it was really going to be released.

I found the cover:

Will the reprints be all in color?

The object is to reprint the strips as they originally appeared, so no they won't all be in color. The Sunday installments, yes, the dailies no.

Really looking forward to this as it's material I've never had the opportunity to see before.

Pete Poplaski is amazing; he can channel Dick Sprang, Wayne Boring, Curt Swan, and with this cover Carmine Infantino...all wonderfully. It's almost worth having this line of books just to get more of his artwork.

What really puts it over the top, though, is the colors. Comics just don't have colors like that any more. Blood red, maybe, but the others not so much.

How cool! I was recently wishing they'd reprint these strips.

Is there a projected release date?

Ucking fawesome! I can't wait for years 1968-69 for the Sundays... hopefully they will be in the fill-format/halves format too, since I am only missing 3 of them in that format from 1968, and the last 8 from 1969 - having them in color would be even better!

And how about the mythical Galexo dailies from May, 1972 to sometime in 1974? Now those would be REALLY amazing!!!

Yeah, I'm a really lucky guy to have every daily and Sunday from the 1966-74 run, aside from those 2 areas I mentioned above.

They've uploaded a preview of this book to Amazon. Looks like there'll be a lot of tie-ins with the tv show, even though the book is primarily reprinting newspaper strips:

In the top line of faces, is that supposed to be Sgt O'Hara on the far left???
Cheers,
Terry
PS Weird - but I actually thought the grey haired gentleman with glasses was supposed to be Alfred (based on the image of Alan Napier...) then I realised it was meant to be Commissioner Gordon.

I've always been really curious about this strip, but I have to say: That's pretty painful to read.
