The Last Replica Cowl from Williams Studio 2

Post by Chuck Williams » Fri Jan 03, 2014 10:05 am

Hi All,

The New Year brings on a change at Williams Studio 2.

The replica cowl now in the Etsy store is our last top of the line replica cowl for sale.
We have hit the end of the available top grade original fabric.
We are also retiring the shell that is used under the replica.

We're giving the gang here the heads up first.

We will still be making spandex covered cosplay cowls and will introduce a midgrade version on par with the Wally Cowl and the earlier cowls we used to sell.
Details to come.

A sincere THANK YOU to all of our friends that have helped to make our replica cowl the best, most accurate cowl available since the show ran in the sixties.

For those that own one of our replicas, you now have an irreplaceable collectors item!

All the best to everyone in the New Year!!!

Wow, the end of an era! I'm so thankful to have one.

Chuck, you can be sure I'll be up for a cosplay cowl in the future.

Good luck to anyone on the fence about ordering this magnificent replica.

If the fabric presents itself, will you make these again in the future?

It's not the fabric that is the problem, it's the dyeing.

The dyehouse had a fire last year and the new equipment isn't able to work with this fabric anymore.
They were the best working with this type of fabric and if they can't do it, I have no desire to work with anyone else.

The last bolt has subtle surface flaws that prevent us from using it for the top of the line replica cowls, so we have decided to retire what we call the replica and the shell.

The bolt of fabric we have will be used for the midgrade cosplay cowl until it is exhausted.

While it lasts we will be selling yardage for gloves and trunks for complete cosplay Batsuits in the original fabric for those that missed the replica suits and want the more authentic look and feel of the fabric.

We are also moving forward with the most affordable cosplay cowl where the fabric isn't the original , but has the same quality look and finish we have developed over the years.

We have noticed that for many people the fabric isn't a big concern or selling point.
They just want something that has an authentic look and the details of construction are secondary.

We will still be making collectible cowls.
Times change and we have to change with them.

Resurrecting an old thread here. I understand the difference in the fabrics, but what was/is the difference in the shells? You mentioned that you were retiring this shell.

The "replica" shell is the one that I created using a plaster cast (that I own) taken from an original cowl to make.

It has all the asymmetry and bumps that the original cowls have and what makes the cowl almost impossible to replicate to look screen used. They are pretty wonky!

The shell we are using now is similar to the cowls we were selling prior to getting the plaster cast but has a few changes made to better reflect what we have learned from the plaster cast.

It is slightly more symmetrical and smoother. More of what most people think it is rather than what it actually was.

But even though they are different there is so little overall change in size or shape that the fabric pattern we use fits both perfectly.

Even I have trouble knowing which is which when I'm going through old photos.
Here are two strange looking fellows wearing the two different cowls...
