Batman Utility Belt

Post by Alfred The Butler »

I have been wanting to create a shadow box with 1966 Batman reproduction props. On the utility belt, is the Mattel DC Classic good enough quality as a display piece or is there a better one out there that will not blow my budget? Also the batarang that comes with the Mattel belt is black, wasn't it blue in the TV series?

Mattel Batarang that I've seen is blue. The Mattel belt is nice and good for display but for a more affordable & realistic looking one, Renato advertises them on ebay. He's got one out there now and he has said in the past he offers specials for Bat-board members so you may want to PM him. Here's a link to the current eBay ad:

If budget is the issue, I'd go with the Mattel for a display. It photographs well with cosplay suits and is on sale.
It also has the added appeal of a collectible toy.

In my opinion the Renato belt is no more "realistic" looking. Neither are "replicas" in look or materials to the belts on the show.

Can you please post pics when you are finished.
I've been wanting to do the same thing.
I was hoping to find a "store-bought" shadow box, however I'm not seeing anything I like.
Thinking of making my own. :(

What would be a step up to more "realistic replica"?

Renato's are way off the mark even by Mattel standards. Just saying.

Honestly. Chuck's is really amazing but he won't make such claims as "just like the original." His are nicer and I've worn one of Adam's originals but his are by far the closest to the real deal in dimension, shape, color and general materials. Personally, his is the best utility belt I have ever seen and own and I've gone through a few and have seen more than my share of ones bought by other fans that didn't live up to other advertisers' claims.
When you buy quality, you cry only once.
If price is an issue at the moment, just go with the Mattel.

Ditto with Scott's comments. I've had 4, and Chuck's is the museum piece. Mattel is cosplay at best, which is not a bad thing, 99% of people might never know the difference. But those that do...

I've been wanting to do the shadow box too but I haven't found the right size.

As to what you display, it depends on what is important to you.
The "idea" of the Utility Belt or the actual piece you are displaying.

If it's the "idea" of the belt that appeals to you, the Mattel belt looks nice has the added collector toy appeal.

If you are wanting something closer to the actual belt on the show, I might start with the buckle.

This is just about as close to the real thing as possible and still less expensive than the Mattel belt or the belt on ebay.
It can be added to if you get the urge and it is not a piece that you will have to "trade up" for later.

Just a thought!

I love my Renato belt. It is very nice and I have gotten so many complements on it. It was a good price for upgrade. Some folks look at it and say it is a great replica. When I showed it to Adam West at a Portland Comic Con He said it was a very nice replica. I will never forget that. BTW Burt liked my suit as well.

I am going to start collecting props and see how many I can acquire then decide on my shadow box size.

That looks great! Captures the essence of the belt while highlighting the costume nicely.

I should do something like this to show off my Ghostdog buckle.
I'm on Instagram as kustomjeff if you want to see more toy pics and some motorcycle stuff too. :-P
