USPS Blues

Post by Keith Mayo »

Got this is a trade with an old friend. Arrived this afternoon and the box was not damaged in any way. Opened it up and this is what I found. All the king's horses and all the king's men couldn't put the Bard back together again. :-(

Shock and Vibration are the invisible culprits. If its cold enough, a back tire running over a curb is enough to shatter it.

I sold a cast iron sausage filler from the 1870's and I learned the hard way that cast iron is fragile and susceptible to shock and vibration. Professionally packed in a wooden crate, no outward damage, but the handle interface was shattered like the Bards' head.

Yup-- also learned the hard way that winter temperature fluctuations (like from going to a heated warehouse to a un-heated plane cargo section and back) can destroy some sculptures without effecting the box and shipping materials.

Man, that's a drag. Gives me pause in considering whether to sell ours online.

Renowned Batman Collector Brad Ladner assisted me in replacing my Shakespeare bust that was destroyed in transit.

Breaks my heart to see this!

I was fortunate enough that the small break my bust experienced as a result of me flying home to the UK from San Diego with it in my checked luggage was repairable.
