Ultimate cowls!

Post by Chuck Williams »

Hi All,

The first batch of Ultimate Cowls are shipping this coming week and I just wanted to thank all the collectors that made this image possible!!

It's my belief this is probably close to the amount of shells created for the run of the show.

We see 6 in the first season in one shot during Mr. Freeze episode.
Of those, a few were first season hero cowls and one pilot cowl

Chuck
Can I make a request that you post daily on the boards? I'm serious, I live for logging in and finding stuff like this. As a kid we used to try and figure out how many cowls there were, we'd look for different markings, etc. The first thing we ever spotted was the Pilot cowl was different than the rest of the cowls. It's SO great having access to your process!

I was running numbers in my head and after seeing similarities in the trimming of the fiberglass shells and various cowls.
I realized that when Jan Kemp said they made dozens of cowls, he meant covers, not shells.

Three cowls (and shells) we all know. The Hardeman, The Azarian and The "Alfred" cowls.

Mark's is in the best shape and is third season.
Azarians is first season that was used in the film and died in the second season.
The Alfred cowl was made the end of the first season and used a lot in the film and famously painted pink in the second season.

I know of three other cowls and shells that were traded or auctioned off the top of my head that are not mentioned above.
Two were in an auction lot with Hubie's costumes.
One was owned by the guy that made the plaster cast I have. He lost it in a trade gone wrong and it has never resurfaced.
These three all had second and third season paint jobs and were in the same condition as Mark Hardemans'.

Two cowls that Adam had in his possession after the show that got recovered. One became the "Gila" and one was the "London" cowl that has since disappeared. Both of those were used extensively in the second season.

That is only 8 shells that we can say for sure exist and would have been enough for the first Mr. Freeze fight.

The Comisar collection has one cowl cover without the shell that was made in the second season.

Thanks again Andy! And thank you Scott and Ben for being our hosts!!!!
It's GREAT to have a place to share these thoughts and oddball theories with old pals that have been there all along!!

This story would make an excellent podcast or YouTube video. Next, the utility belts, boots, gloves, capes, etc. then Robin, then Catwoman, and so one.

The ruby slippers are as interesting, if any of you follow WOZ history.

It’s here, but can’t open it until Sunday!

What a knowledge you have Chuck on the Bat cowls! Unbelievable, I need to read more on this. Thanks for your incredible work. In several weeks I am proud to own an ultimate cowl!

Does anyone know the height of the Adam West bust with the cowl in place? Is it greater than 10” tall?

Yes, it's 16" + tall... Minimum case height 17", 13" wide and 12" deep...
That's the info on the cosplay cowl.
I think the Ultimate is a bit taller and would go with 18" tall and 13" deep...

Chuck,

You should publish a book on the cowls. Your knowledge on this stuff is utterly amazing!

Nice! The bottom would have to be at least 14" diameter inside the glass and 17-18" high inside...

I don't think it'll work Lou-- the shoulders of the bust are pretty wide.

The eBay seller said it was for the Batmobile phone, but that Bell jar design would make a cool bust.cowl display. 10” high and 23” circumference will fit the mini bust nicely!
