Williams studio featured on 13th dimension

Great article about Chuck’s 1970’s Neal Adams based cowl. I tried to add this to Chuck’s original post, but could not find it, but it’s worth posting again for our newer members.
It’s next on my list, but what color to buy?

Thanks for sharing Lou, great to see those photos and read the low-down all in one place. I really like the way that the highlights hit both of the brighter blues and the black, but I think for me personally, the 70's comic blue might just have the edge.
Re: Williams studio featured on 13th dimension
You could use the 1966 cape with the royal blue, and you are right about the shadows. I might lean to black after the original, and noir look (Alex Ross), and the fan made predator short film (I forget the title). That lighter blue is the Neal Adams Batman!

I’m of sound mind in saying that Batman’s cape and cowl was always supposed to be black, which led to me purchasing a black version of this cowl. This blue version is very well made and makes me wonder how sharp this would have looked if the show had progressed into the 70’s. The blue satin look never bothered me as badly as the painted on eyebrows and nose piece. The fixes on this mask is ingenious. Wish they had it on the show itself.

Kamdan,
I happen to agree with you. If you look at any character in comics with black hair (Superman, Lois Lane, etc) the highlights are always blue. So early on in Batman's career, it was a Black and Gray costume. There is probably a thread here from a while ago.
Over time (addition of Robin?) it became more blue with black shading. In fact, I never noticed the shorts always remained Black throughout, even as the cowl coloring became a lighter blue. Even the Batmobile had blue highlights in the 1950s, but clearly was a black car, not a blue car.
Chuck really captured the shading with the Navy blue. I think it's easier to match up the Black and Gray from gloves and accessories. Saving my pennies and will likely go Black too.
Did you ever see the Adam West based cowl with the extended ears - WOW, Holy Noir.

Still digging the heck out of that 70's blue!
Re: Williams studio featured on 13th dimension
Cowl looks fantastic, but my first impression is to be reminded of the greatness of Chuck's bust of Adam. Never ceases to impress me.
I wanted to play around with the photos and see how close I could get to the comics' Bronze Age Bat-cowl... unsurprisingly, hard edges didn't quite work, but I think this translates it pretty well.

Now you are starting to look like the Ideal Bat Helmet. Freaky.

Ha! Good catch... it does resemble the wear patterns on my Ideal helmet (handed down from my father and recently to my son).
That helmet fits me considerably better than it did in the ’80s, but the effect is not quite the same.

Love it!

It’s interesting how much Adam looked like Jeffrey Hunger from the nose down.

Thanks so much everyone!!!
mwilbury, I LOVE the photoshop you did!!
I enjoy making these. It's a cross between cowlmaking and beltmaking .
I'm a bit surprised they didn't do something like this for the show.
A softer version would have worked with the satin fabric and given a consistent layout for the brows.
Thanks again!!!

I believe navy is that happy medium for Batman. I think darkening the forehead dimensions could look interesting. Maybe a shiny black or Ultra marine color?
