Third season style cowl

Post by Chuck Williams »

Hi All,

Just wrapped a third season "Ultimate Cowl" for a super collector.

I used the tracing and measurements I made of the Hardeman cowl paint and cut out for this one.

It also has the same vintage hard hat rig inside. It really changes the look of the cowl when worn.

Another unique one is on the way. ;)

Are the ears black or blue? These cowls are mesmerizing!

This still somehow looks so much better finished than *any* of the S3 cowls ever did on screen! Happy New Year, Williams'!

Thanks so much Guys and Happy New Year to you all!!!

Thanks Larry!

Hey Lou, they are blue. Thanks!!

Hey Ben, Thanks!!
The real cowls were banged together so quickly. I think the sillier they looked to the production the better.
For this cowl in particular I couldn't bring myself to put one ear an inch higher than the other! I didn't fold the ears like they did so much in the third season either.
The snaps are also sewn on evenly !
But I imagine that the one pictured above would be looking ratty in no time if used at there speed of their shooting schedule.

I always thought the ears were blue, but we only had black and white TVs. It wasn’t until this board until I knew otherwise.

When people walk by the display case, they can’t help but stare. Thanks for your great attention to detail!

The third season ears are blue?? Geez Louise Chuck you are killing us! You were the one who taught us they were black now we're back to blue! I think it was a good plan to not go with the flopsy mopsy ear style often seen in S3.

Do you think there were less cowls being used by the Third Season? We often see cowl variations in the early episodes, sometimes even within an episode, but I wonder if by S3 the budget was such that they had fewer to work with.

Hey Andy, I think you are thinking of someone else regarding the ear color. I've always made blue ears.
When I started making cowls the Hardeman cowl was already photographed by Wally and the blue ears were known.

Absolutely fewer cowls in the third season!
I am pleasantly surprised how well they matched the paint on them. You can see the differences but it's more like the first season. Subtle.
The second season is crazy in how different they all are.

Wow- I just walked over to my Chuck cowl with a flashlight-- and you are right (as I would only imagine you would be) they are dark blue.
All these years-- I was living a lie!

I think I was thinking of the discovery of the face portion being black which goes WAAAAY back.

Thanks Guys!!

Andy, you sound just like Wally when he saw the Hardeman cowl for the first time.
He posted here about the ears and was just as surprised to see blue instead of black.

That's what I love about this silly show! Always more fun around the corner!!

Amazing to see-- I think for anyone who's seen one of the screen used cowls and how shoddy they were, these really are Ultimate Super Fan versions.

Chuck, I have a question. As much as I love what you've improved with the cowl, I was wondering is there a way to design a cowl where the ears doesn't appear PASTE ON? Could there be enough fabric in the profile where it could go over the ears to be part of it? Seemless.

Thanks SO MUCH Andy!!!

STEPhonIT I'm sure there is a way to do it with a different overall design but not with this one.
