Second Season Cowl

Post by Chuck Williams »

Another stand out cowl from the series for our super collector!
This time it's from the second season.

When it first appeared it jumped off the screen as different than all the other cowls.
The trimming exposes a bit more of Adam's face.

This and one other from the same time period with similar trimming are the two cowls Adam left the show with that I am aware of..
It is also the one Hot Toys used as a model for their figure.

Absolutely beautiful-- the more open face reminds me of the 30s and 40s cowls so obviously I have a preference. I've never liked the checkmark eyebrow design but you nailed it.

Thanks Guys!!

Not in this one Jimmy. It's foam covered in chamois.

It was my least favorite too Andy! I was happy to do a change up though.
It was harder than I thought! I tend to make my lines "thick and thin" as we were all trained to do in art class.
ANY finesse in the line made it look wrong!

Some other differences in this one is that it was snugged in around the neck and the ears are curved outward much more.

After looking at some images, it seems that Hot Toys used the trim of this cowl but not the paint app. They went with the movie paint. My Bad.

Some fans can endlessly pontificate about the various details of the Batmobile and I roll my eyes so I know there are some reading about the minutia of the Cowls and feel the same way, but I could go on endlessly about them. I wish I'd had the opportunity to ask Jan Kemp if he know how many shells were made and used but I doubt if even he knew. In a conversation with Adam at two different dinners he told me they had "dozens" and then later "a few" so I doubt if even he knew for certain. We have the photographic evidence of the first Mr Freeze episode to show us that there were at least five in use.

Image

That one in the middle looks like the Pilot Cowl to me, and I'm sure some of these are stunt cowls. Have we already put together a screen grab of all the different cowl markings and shapes?

It's also interesting to note in this photo that we see how the placement of the chest emblem effects the overall athletic look of the suit, again with the middle gent having the highest placement as well as the guy to his right-- the suit just looks better than when it lands closer to his stomach (i.e. the first guy on the left).

I tracked them by eyebrows, nose and ears!
I sincerely doubt there were many more than what we see here.
A couple of stunt cowls probably and maybe some made to replace broken shells...

Another reason I think there are fewer cowls out there is that on the back of the Hardeman cowl (3rd season) is a mark that looks like "Adam 2" to me.
The second cowl we see Adam in after the pilot style is this one. Looks like it to me if you compare the trimming.
So the idea that an early first season shell was still being used in the third season tells me they had darn few shells floating around.

Do you think the faces were ever re-painted without the whole shell being re-covered? I always thought the purple tint was simply the old fabric but after seeing some behind the scenes photos from Season Three in natural light the cowl is a blue as it can be, so that leads me to think the colored lighting of the sets often changed the hue. You shine a red light on a blue cowl and you'll end up with purple.

I agree with the total number being smaller, it would also lead me to believe that the pink cowl was eventually stripped and re-covered in blue.

If they did simply retouch the face paint and leave the cover on it probably wasn't a common occurrence but who can say?
I think most the time it was just stripped and recovered when needed.

The pink cowl happily escaped destruction or recovering and somehow made it into costume rental at Western Costume!
It was painted to a navy blue and black over the pink and rented out.
It famously was seen in the Batgirl PSA and the Saturday Morning cartoon review show with Avery Schriever.

It is now in the hands of a collector and will be on display in the New Jersey area soon!

Ah that's right-- I remember this now. Must have been incredibly uncomfortable for Dick Gautier to wear for that PSA.

Obligatory Joke:
Good News: It survived.
Bad News: It's in New Jersey.

For the record I think Jersey has a lot of great parts, but as a former New Yorker I had to sign an agreement to make Jersey jokes when they come up, which is quite often (ba-boom! See what I did there?)!
