A Fun Find...

Post by Chuck Williams »

Hi All,

I've been looking for this for ages and finally found one.

This is a vintage box similar to the construction of the "set box" the cowls were stored and taken to the set in.

Just need to make a new post and base for the cowl to fit and it's found it's new home.

:D :D :D

The one you found looks sturdier - that one in the bottom photo always looked flimsy, like it was made of cardboard.

This is really neat, I love period stuff like this! Every time I've been to costume places like "It's a Wrap" in Burbank, i've always dreamt about finding things like lurking.

When I lived in the Boston area, I haunted antique shops all the time.
Ben, you're living in a Mecca for great old finds...

This box and the set boxes are a vulcanized fiber product. Thin but tough as nails.

Great find! Fibre cases are so hard to find nowadays. I've never seen one with a hinged side like that - awesome!

This is what I travel my cowls in, an old wig case. It, too, is a period piece, from the sixties, so it's fun to carry around.

That almost looks like it could double for "the bomb", Rick!

BTW, I have always called this the "Three Cowl Photo" but when I was looking at the unedited photo for set box info, I found a hidden cowl in the box with the Robin gloves!!!

Wonder how many cowls they would use during an average shooting day?

I've never seen that behind the scenes pic before, Chuck. Your case is certainly very in keeping with the period gear shown.

And, man, they've got three cowls in the case with COMPLETELY different eyebrow paint jobs! Sheesh! No one would put up with that inconsistency on a lead character on a TV show nowadays!

Thanks Rick!

I agree!

In the first season they did a pretty good job of matching two of the cowls that did the bulk of the season but when the movie cowl pops in late in the season, it was a bit of a shock.

After that, all bets were off and they got less polished as the show ran.
As did the show itself IMO.
