Extended cowl ear test Update; IT'S DONE!

Post by Chuck Williams »

Hi All!

Well I think I'm gonna do it.

I've made a test using the method I think was used and it certainly looks like the one on the show.
Bumps and all!

I think I'm going to attempt to do it to my existing cowl made in the fashion of the Purrfect Crime style.
It's the only really glaring difference in construction.

It does camouflage the edge of the attached ear in a lot of angles so I suppose it is successful even if it's not 100% from every angle.

I'll keep you posted!

Hi Chuck, Since Your patterns are on the way, and now I see this posting, might I request a tutorial either verbal or pictorial please? Other than the shape of the top of the ear, I'm going to need to know how You did Yours so I can do mine in a similar fashion, please?
Thanks, Chuck,
Your "Bat-Buddy",
Larry

Certainly looks authentic, Chuck!

Sorry if this covers old territory, but is the popular opinion that there was only one cowl with ear treatments done this way? Or were there more? The "Purrfect Crime" cowl is the same one that is used for most of the Bookworm episode, too, correct?

Thanks Guys! :D

All the first season cowls had some sort of blending edge except the last cowl of the first season which is also a cowl used in the movie.

They were much smaller and just focused on the edges of the applied ear.

Only two had the longer extended area down the side. The cowl in the center batch of photos below, seen on the TV guide cover, first Joker and Mr. Freeze episodes time frame was the first solid looking cowl that laid the ground work the Purrfect crime cowl.
They look very similar and are often mistaken for each other. They both have the wonky nose line.

Glad you reminded me Rick!

It's in the bookworm episode that they do a shot with the movie cowl.

I was shocked to see it mixed in with the first season cowls that early.

Kind of makes one wonder WHICH IS the "official" and "correct" style of ear and eyebrows/ nose painting.

There really isn't one as such. Simply preferences held by each of us. Many of us have favorite cowls based on the nuances that we like about them, for instance as Chuck has already mentioned in this thread, the cowl worn in season one's "Purrfect Crime" is regarded by a lot of us as the archetypal TV show cowl.

Here's a guide from around a decade ago on the old board that I believe Wally(?) put together to identify the three main types of brows that you will see throughout the course of the show.

Hi Ben,
Thanks for that info. Kind of like how Dick Sprang sometime drew eyebrows and sometimes not :D . Either way, I appreciate You pulling that up. I owe You one, Ben. Thank You again! :D

Then there's the screen test cowl which had 2 different brow types (probably testing the brow styles to see which they'd go with.)

The brow on the left of the photo is almost a hybrid of the Checkmark & Line style from Ben's graph above while the right one has kind of it's own funky Checkmark style.

Awesome!!!!!!! It gives me hope that I can get the similar effect with mine. That cowl is simply AWESOME!!!!!! What color paint did You use, Chuck? Please? Did I understand that You used latex to blend in the ear edge?

Thanks,
Larry
