My finished Mad Hatter hat

Post by rajung »

Well I finished my Mad Hatter hat project.
Way more difficult than I thought it would be ,from finding a close match vintage hat to making the eyes, open close mechanism for lid and proper measurements to make it all work
link for YouTube short clip
hope it works, my first YouTube posting

Absolutely fantastic! I agree with Chuck, that mechanism is as smooth as silk!

Having assisted with some last minute repairs to one of Chaz's replicas, I know how tricky it can be to achieve such a smooth operation!

Thanks for the compliments.During working on this, I more than once was ready to call it quits thinking something that should be so simple, really wasn't the case. But what would I do with this 60.00 vintage hat?
Thinking about building a circuit with 9v battery and LED's for the eye centers that strobe fast left to right but since that wasn't used originally I am not sure if I want the extra work for nothing.
Looking at it now I am like, so simple!
May not be how a prop shop does things.
I have had a few inquiry's about making another one, but the hat was the most expensive part, and cutting the lid off, and screwing up would be a killer, plus you have to make sure everything is measured for opening and closing and once its done its done,Since its epoxy holding pivot hinge and aluminum slide brackets at the right location.
