Riddler is Wee / Batgirl Turns Three ... more baby costumes!

Post by mwilbury »

My father made plans to attend MegaCon this year for Adam and Burt's supposed farewell tour. I figured my daughter would wear her Batgirl outfit again, so I had to come up with something for our infant son. About a week before the convention, she turned three years old, and he hit six months (just started crawling).

(I posted some photos from MegaCon in the Events forum.)

So, with some sewing by my wife, I made a Riddler costume for him. It was the perfect choice, because it can be pretty-screen accurate while avoiding the baby-irritation of a cape or cowl (or even a mask, since Gorshin usually wore it around his neck). At this point in his development, he also has the perfect hairline for the role.

Of course, I had to go as his henchman. It was a simple, breathable outfit for the hot weather (apologies to my daughter). I also made the custom shirt using black, heatpress vinyl.

As mentioned in my costume thread from last Halloween, CatGreg made the wonderful cape and cowl for my daughter's costume. She continues to grow into it, and now she has more beautiful curls peeking out from the back of the cowl.

A bit on the costume construction for those interested. I bought white, cotton onesies and tights and dyed them before applying the question marks using heatpress vinyl.

As you might expect, I used RIT dye. With some helpful feedback from Danbar, I mixed Kelly Green and Apple Green. I was trying to split the difference between my mental image of the outfit and the more saturated Kelly of the actual costume as revealed on the Blu Ray.

I started out with a 50/50 mix, but I did not put enough dye in because I wasn't sure if this qualified as a light or dark color per RIT instructions. I ended up putting the garments in the dye bath three times (with a wash and dry in between). By the final bath, the mix was more like 90% Kelly Green and more dye in the mix. As we've learned about all these outfits, the color comes out looking different in just about every lighting situation.

I modified Chuck and Lynne's Robin mask pattern and just free-styled the belt. Both are sewn by my wife using lavender (or is it orchid or lilac?) lightweight satin.

Thanks to the board for all the useful reference material over the years.

It turned out great! You and your wife did a really good job putting it altogether. The kids are precious. Thanks for sharing all of the photos from the event and from your project.
