Holy Wonky cowls!!!
Hi All,
As some of you know, I'm a cowl nut. There is no 12 step program for it...
In the years of replicating them, there was always something about the original cowls that I couldn't put my finger on or make happen in a replica.
Well, with recent additions to my collection, I was able to figure out the "secret sauce" of the originals...
They are wonky as Hell!!! No replica that is even slightly symmetrical will ever look like an original!
My first thoughts were the thin fiberglass shells warped over time or in storage.
That was until I had the opportunity to see more than one over the years and they all had the same bizarre form.
Forgive my terrible attempt to photoshop but here was a great image that illustrated the point perfectly.
The centerline in straight up and down but the left side of the face(looking at it) is swept back and the nose is kicked off to the left. The back is just as misshapen.
Just wanted to share some observations of just how hand crafted this piece was and why it is almost impossible to get right. Because it's wrong in so many wonderful ways!!!

Love seeing stuff like this! Great picture of the birds eye cowl view
The goal when making a perfect replica is to not focus on the perfections, but perfecting the imperfections.

Absolutely love this - I can only imagine how satisfying it was to deduce this!

Very cool, Chuck. Did they use a life cast of Adam to form the fiberglass?

That nose line always looked crooked to me. I can’t imagine trying to mess something up on purpose, because human nature is to try and get it even (symmetrical) on each side. You have done a magnificent job on these Chuck.
