Robin Costume Tunic Fabric?

Post by rickrickrick »

Hi, all.

I tried the search function for this information without results.

So, Robin's cape is satin, the R insignia is felt, the briefs are springweave, the shirt sleeves are the sleeves from a t-shirt worn underneath the tunic, the gloves are pecary leather - what is the fabric of the tunic??

In close up photos, it looks like a cotton twill to me. I don't think it looks like wool. But a cotton twill would likely show some signs of distressing, like wrinkling, and possibly fading - photos of the original Hardeman look incredibly pristine, smooth with very even color.

Any insight anyone has to offer is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Hey Rick,

If you find a source for cotton dyeable springweave in NY, Give a shout!!!!

This goes out to everyone!!!!!

I can only find acrylic and polyester springweave now.
My old cotton springweave vendor dried up and I haven't found it anywhwere else.

You want 10" tubular cotton/elastic springweave.
The original trunks had no seams up the sides or back.

Keep me posted!!!

Thanks, Chuck.

I have, alas, looked for cotton springweave all over the fabric district without success. You never know - sometimes you just fall into some out-of-the-way place that has it tucked away in a corner. That's how scored original Kermit the Frog fleece!

I didn't even know there was such a thing as TUBE springweave!

Cheers!

Happy to help Rick!

Yep, it's liable to be on any dark shelf when you least expect it!!

A smallish 10" tubular or also called circular knit.

Same concept but a different knit style/pattern from the knit tube tops I remember from back in the day.

But that does't mean it wasn't used by someone for a tube top.

As in 10" WIDE??

How in the heck do you fit it over your hips??

Especially if you've got goddess hips, which I do.

10" wide tubular fabric is going to be a smidge uncomfortable for me.

The fabric is VERY stretchy.
It is a 10" wide tube, not a 10" wide flat piece of fabric.

It does have quite a grip though!!!
I now know why Burt Ward called them "Python Pants".
The squeeze is very unique!!! :D

Hey Rick,

The grain of the twill is too pronounced.

The Gabardine grain is more subtle. The original has a very low key grain.

The red is lighter than that example too.

I'll post some photos later.... Gotta run!

Hey Rick,

That looks better. I'm not familiar with the Pantone code they are refering to. Texile guide I suppose.

Back in the day the samples I got from B.Black were a bit too dark.

It is quite light and certainly not the tomato red I thought it was going to be!
A light warm red.

The shot of Lynnne and her friend Peggy taking the hand sewing of the vests outside. They are sitting in shade on a sunny day.
This gives a good idea of the color....

It looks like a slightly "pinky" red. Not deep at all. But not orangey, either, or dull like a maroon. Saturated, but not deep.

Many thanks for the helpful guidance, as always!
