Custom FTC Molly the Moll

Post by Lou Szabo »

I thought I started this thread a couple of years ago, but cannot find it, so here goes again.
I bought some figures from FTCs sister site https://www.classictvtoys.com/

I'm documenting my path so you can take the shortcut if you want the figure added to your collection.
I misplaced my original project, so I'm going from memory, and some of the pieces were purchased a second time (Arrgh)
The goal:
Have a female 8" figure wearing the Robin TV series costume, but with a Molly red head with shorter hair.
Items you need:
Female body
Red hair female head
Green gloves (female)
Green boots/shoes (Robin)
Robin Body suit
Robin Mask
Robin Yellow cape
Robin Utility Belt
custom Backing card for blister pack
blister pack
Optional custom box for figure.

First step: Body.
I started with the standard female body, but I quickly found out that the Robin TV costume doesn't fit it well, so I went with the new S type female body and the robin suit fits as it should

A note here: The website has changed from when I started a couple of years ago. You used to be able to order the costume complete sans body, now you have to piece it together.
That S type body is the way to go for Catwoman and Batgirl if you want a better looking figure.

So my order arrived, and I realized I forgot to order gloves, belt and cape. I did order the shoes and costumer. I ordered a red haired doll head with light red hair. I just reordered those parts.

I played around with a backing card for the blister pack. This is not final, just playing around.

I'll be cutting the hair. The color matches the third head the best, but the first two are poofier (guy description :D )

I did contact Anthony Durso for a custom box. I did order an extra backing card, and will likely print images and paste them on the packaging.

A quick and easy project and not too expensive when you buy the right parts and don't forget where you put them. Hope to have it together when the second batch of parts arrive, or I find the first batch.

I'll post a picture post hair cut, then in costume, and finally in the package.

Some other reference photos
Note, she's not wearing the utility belt in some of the photos, as it shows off the female figure.

I made a Molly in 2017.

Riddler's moll, Molly, customized from a "Married with Children" Kelly Bundy figure and a FTC "Teen Titans" Robin outfit. The hair is parted on the wrong side, but it took the orange spray paint very well. Note the Robin head became the life mask she holds in her hand.

I'm working on a Molly myself, and like Therin made a mask of Robin from a spare head. #SilenceOfTheLambsArtsAndCrafts

Love those custom figures. The hair is the hardest part!

I can’t believe you guys sacrificed a Robin head. As for me, “Accessories sold separately “

Lou Szabo: I'm looking forward to seeing Your take on Molly, although I do have a question for You: What size bust did You use for Molly?

I'm going to be buying an "S" type body for the prototype of my 1939 "Bat Girl" costume. I'll be using a "Medium" size bust.
Molly, along with Leslie Gore, were my favorite "Moll"s.

How do You plan to do Her Hairstyle, btw, Lou?
Good Luck with it.
Cheers,
Larry

Hi Larry,
I used the standard size to ensure the Robin costume fit. Here are a few pictures with the costume in place.

You’ll see the hair color is the closest of the three heads. This is the TV Robin costume on the 8” S body, standard chest

It could also work for the Dark Knight Returns Robin (Kellie?), but I’d probably opt for the 6” figure and the hulk body type.

By the way, Anthony at the ToyRoom just got back to me with a Box design and I ordered it. I'll post pictures with the head variants when I have them (hopefully Saturday mail call). Tony is quick with shipping boxes too.

Agree! I was miffed that Ms Bundy parted her hair on the wrong side, but it was the best face.
I can’t believe you guys sacrificed a Robin head.
The only reason I ended up making Molly was that my 8" comic book "Teen Titans" set (from FTC) came with an 80s' Robin that I didn't really need, because it wasn't Burt Ward's likeness. (I also already had a 7" "First Appearance" comic Robin who stands with FTC's 7" replicas of the Mego "Teen Titans". And his costume would have been too small for 8" Molly.) When the face was cut from the head, and the domino mask slightly adjusted, it worked beautifully to complete Molly's disguise.

It's a resin custom head, but for the life of me I can't remember where I got it or who it was supposed to be
