The second mask

Post by Lounge lizard »

This is a close up of the mask Van wore when he posed for the publicity photos with Adam West, the Batmobile and the Black Beauty.
He also wore it in a brief clip ABC used to promote their new season of shows. Here's a direct link:

I never liked that mask one bit. I'm really glad they settled on the design they did for the bulk of the show's run. Those early variations didn't do anything for me. The "final" mask seemed to compliment Van's so much better in the way it was molded to the curvature of the his face.

Actually, the mask in the link never appeared in any of the episodes. It seemed to be a smaller mask, as if originally a tryout for Kato but I cannot be certain.

The 1st, TV-used mask (left) and the standard one side by side:

The 1st mask might have been uncomfortable for Van Williams and Bruce Lee, but I do like the "insect-like" design of the eyes and contours.

Within the fiction of the show, it'd be easier to tell it was Britt Reid with the second mask :)

That's a good point. Its too much of a "second skin" that does not distract the viewer in the way the pilot mask does with its unusual features.
