Hornet new movie news

Post by rsaffle »

In the wake of 2020’s The Invisible Man, Universal is reportedly looking to reunite with Leigh Whannell (Upgrade) for The Green Hornet and Kato, a film Whannell is in talks to direct.

Deadline reports this afternoon that David Koepp (Jurassic Park, Stir of Echoes) wrote the script, and if Whannell officially signs on to direct the project will be fast-tracked.

With Whannell on board we can expect this one to deliver a fresh take and thrilling action sequences.

I haven't heard of this director, but then I'm not a horror fan. David Koepp has had written some pretty successful movies, so hopefully the screenplay is decent. Fingers crossed this is done well and doesn't end up like Superman IV or Star Trek V, or god forbid Seth Rogen's version.

I just rewatch the 2011 GH film and it's just embarrassing what Rogen does to the Hornet. What's really puzzling is that it was approved by the Trendle family. You wouldn't think the family would have put up with that. Curious.

I am recalling all this from articles that I read way back in 2010. The right to use the Green Hornet was purchased by Neal Mortiz (the lead producer of the 2011 movie) for a certain number of years to make a movie. The "artistic and production control" (tone of the movie, selection of scriptwriter, director, and actors) was under the control of Neal Moritz and other producers, not the Trendel estate.

Around 2010 there were two camps of fans. The majority camp were either skeptical or opposed to the direction of the 2011 movie. The minority camp were happy that after all these years, a Green Hornet movie even with someone like Rogen as the lead was finally made.

The Trendel estate has made changes to their web site and now the big title reads - "The Green Hornet and Kato". By the way, "The Green Hornet and Kato" is the working title of the new movie that the Amasia Entertainment and Universal Studios are producing. Here is the link to the official web site:

Casting Kato talks....

Mark it down. Kato will be played by a woman. Just my guess based on Hollywood trends and I'm not for it.

And you know...I don't have an issue with that as long as the rest of the film is done well. Several of the comics have a female Kato. Having a female Kato would also help keep the Bruce Lee comparison's down (IMHO).

I just like movies that keep close to the source material. At least do it right first and then grow from there.
The Hornet will be a tough sell to todays audience without some kind of change and updates though and I hate to say it but it probably wont work in todays world. It would probably have to be a gritty crime story and not kid friendly. A film noir period piece probably wont work.
Most people hate the Rogan Hornet but I understand why they tried to do it light hearted.

What is everyone's opinion on how this movie would work? I want it too real bad for Hornet's sake.
A Chris Nolan style approach?
