"Egg-cellent" podcast (Vincent Price reference here!)
Van Williams, great to hear his voice again, nice vintage interview, thanks for sharing. Didn't know about his health issue! "Pursue and Destroy" is available for viewing online. Interesting about the submarine issue!
About getting TGH back in front of the public. Why not run it on MeTv as they do with Batman? Who would they have to pay? ("20th Century-Fox", "Green Hornet, Inc.", "Bruce Lee Enterprises"???) How much would it cost? Maybe the entities involved should consider a steep discount. Promote it, see what the numbers are, that might indicate if the interest is there for a new producer to take a look at the entity and do something with it now as it will take time.

Nice to hear Van Williams again. Always pretty open about his life and career.
I've said it before, but the GH concept--if a producer is trying to stick to the character's roots--may seem too pulpy for today's audiences who see junk like the MCU, or if he's a non-superpowered superhero / vigilante, they might expect him to be similar to the MCU's Punisher. Of course, there's the inability to divorce TGH from the image of Bruce Lee as a movie star from any interpretation of Kato, as if the character was created for Lee, and did not have a history of his own pre-1966.
MeTV did show it on Sunday mornings a few years ago, I believe. If it was pulled, one might guess it was due to a lack of interest. The lack of an official physical media release is a major blow to the '66 series and its appeal (there's a vocal, pro-physical media community who prefer to own movies and TV, as opposed to being subjected to the whims of streaming services). Unfortunately, we must remember that the couple of generations who would count TGH fans among their number (probably Baby Boomers and early Generation X) is aging or aging out, so who would be left to actively watch reruns or campaign for a physical media release?A. I believe it simply ran its course - a shorter lived series (ie. 26 epsiodes) would naturally have a shorter length syndication distribution deal. A network is less likely to pay for multiple runs back to back as they would recycling the same episodes too frequently, unlike a show like Batman or others with 100+ episodes to rotate.BATWINGED HORNET wrote: ↑Mon Oct 28, 2024 6:12 pm Nice to hear Van Williams again. Interesting, however, Me-TV also ran Kolchak: The Night Stalker for quite some time on its Saturday night block, playing through the 20-episode series often, and from memory, it was in rotation far longer than TGH. I'm not certain, but it would appear Kolchak made a deeper pop-cultural footprint than TGH, hence how often such a short series is run.Ben Bentley wrote: ↑Tue Oct 29, 2024 8:32 pm

Sometimes, I believe TGH would be better off as an animated movie or 6 episode limited animated series on streaming. At least in animation, if a producer wanted to lean toward the radio version of TGH, it would be easier to pull off, as it would not be instantly compared to the Dozier series, or any of its performers or style.

Re: Podcast Special Guest!
Let me ask the same question we posed on the podcast. Do you think TGH would work in a paranormal story? Can TGH and Kato fight the supernatural?

Re: Podcast Special Guest!
Some may feel that the supernatural is out of TGH's "wheelhouse", but a writer with imagination could pull it off....very carefully.
A possible springboard could be TGH & Kato encountering racketeers that employ fake extranormal tactics to influence their gang as well as their targets. The twist could be that the gang attracts the attention of ACTUAL paranormal beings, who use the gang's activities to enable a "back door" to the everyday world. The gang and the Green Hornet & Kato might then be forced to work together to push the beings back from whence they came. The discomfort that TGH may encounter at having to acknowledge paranormal activity could make for some great story tension.
Just a few thoughts.
