Pringle, injured kitten we are fostering

Post by dell »

My wife is on the board of directors for a local non-profit animal shelter. We foster cats and kittens who need special attention that would be difficult to give them at the shelter.

This is Pringle. A few days ago someone brought him to the shelter after they found him injured. It looked like he had been hit by a car. A vet confirmed that he had a broken right rear leg and needed surgery. He had surgery yesterday (they also neutered him so a really bad day!). They had to rebreak his leg and insert a pin. They heavily bandaged his leg making a cast and put a Velcro Xmas tree on it. He needs to be kept confined for at least three weeks.

He would have been stuck in a cage at the shelter, so my wife brought him home and we are using a soft sided cage to keep him confined. He has food, water, litter box and a heated bed in his enclosure, but not much more room so hopefully that will keep him from injuring his leg again.

He panics when he gets picked up as the cast really makes it awkward for him to feel safe. Once you get on him on your lap he settles down pretty quickly and starts purring.

He is lying on my lap purring away as he drifts off to sleep.

Short update: Pringle is eating breakfast well and nibbles at lunch and dinner. We bring him out of his room and hold him for hours at a time and lays on our laps and purrs. He seems quite happy.

The little guy had his first post op checkup and the vet who examined him didn't like the way the pin looked on the X-ray so they kept him overnight. The surgeon will be there tomorrow (Tuesday) morning. They told us not to worry!

The surgeon was satisfied with the pin, so no action needed. However, the X-ray showed the little guy was constipated so he is getting an enema today. Constipation is a common problem after surgery. We can pick him up later this afternoon.

He is back with us. No enema as he had a bowel movement when they sedated him for the X-ray. The little guy was really hungry when we got him back.

Quick update:

Pringle is doing well. He got his cast off 2 weeks ago and is much happier. He is on cage rest meaning he can't run around, climb or jump. We sort of ignore the no running part as he LOVES to run and chase toys (plastic springs are his favorite). We kitty-proofed his play area so climbing and jumping are quite difficult, but he has succeeded in climbing a few things much to our consternation. He was quickly grabbed so he couldn't jump down and possibly injure himself. He has also escaped his room several times and shot the stairs like he was shot out of a cannon. Hard to believe a cat with a bad leg can move as fast as he can. We moved stuff around so further climbing is even more difficult.

Last week he had minor surgery to remove the pin, which was a complete surprise to us as we assumed the pin was permanent. They made an incision, removed the pin and stapled him back together. He gets the staples out in a week. The staples are quite visible, but he leaves them alone.

His leg is quite weak as he hasn't been using it much, but he is putting some weight on it. He forgets about it when he runs around and uses all four legs but starts limping if he runs or walks too much. He goes back to the vet in a week for another X-ray and hopefully is cleared to act like a kitten.

We'll keep him for a week or two and then take him to the shelter so he can be with other kittens and learn some manners. He has started to get a little "bitey" with us and that is something he will learn not to do from other kittens. We'll be sorry to see him leave, but one of our cats literally hates him and has whacked him quite hard when we bring him out in the evening to lay on our laps while we watch TV.

Thanks for the update on Pringle. Hopefully he'll learn to chill on the mouthing after being with the other kittens.
