Golden Age Catwoman costume

Post by Larry A. »

Greetings, Fellow Citizens!

My sister, Julie, would very much like me to make Her a 1940s-1950s Catwoman costume to go with my late 30s-early 40's Batsuit which is why this is in the "off Topic" file. I have been Googleing the Golden Age Catwoman costumes etc. and frankly, I haven't seen any that look correct. Part of this IS due to the fact that many of the women wearing the outfit are not the right build. That happens a lot in these fandoms, I understand that and have no problem with it. What is bothering me is that there are a lot of details either not there or incorrect.

Might I please impose on Our members to help me out here? My two areas of need are; ideas for fabric for the cowl and ideas on how to make a comic book accurate belt. I have not seen in my studies if Her belt is like Bat's utility belt. She has Her cat-o-nine tails, Her "Cat-er-rang" and a cat faced pouch or sporran. Julie is VERY insistent that these are accurate, which I understand. Thanks in advance for any and all help.

Cheers!

Figures Toy Company uses a green belt to match the cape.

And this version has no belt.

Looks like her debut on a Batman cover doesn't come until 1951, when it was a purple cowl, dress and ankle-high boots with a green dress and belt. Blue lapels on the dress.

A few issues later, we've moved to matching green lapels. This one provides a good look at the belt buckle.

When the outfit returns in the Bronze Age, it's intact except for taller boots.

No, much earlier than that;

I think this is a perfect example of the Golden Age Catwoman costume.

Whoops, missed that one. Looks like that one instance of a blue collar in '51 was an aberration.

The belt buckle seems to go back and forth between white and green, but the shape is constant. Looks like a big circle with a fabric covering.

I don't know how practical it would be, but this was always my favorite Catwoman costume by a country mile.

When I was little, I used to think it was Batgirl with a green cape. I entered the series in season 3, and her mask, etc, etc..but later learned it was Catwoman of course. Love that look!

Batman 39 is the only original Batman issue (and one of two comics, period) that I have from the 1940s, and Catwoman is a blonde in it.

Hi Fellow Bat Fans!
I appreciate ALL of Your inputs. Julie likes the green belt and lapels. She definitely hates the very early puffed short sleeves, but likes the cuffed boots. Thank You ALL again for Your input and feel free to continue to input on this subject because One can never have too much info on a costume!!! Cheers!
