Kane Concept Bat-Man Mego figure

Post by Lou Szabo »

So from many reports we hear that Bob Kane's original Bat-Man figure concept sported Red tights with black shorts and boots, no gloves, and a small domino mask on a blond headed Bruce Wayne. To top it off, it sported "Bird" wings, which may have migrated to Batwings. While there is no actual drawing by Bob Kane, several concept drawings have been proposed

So I thought about it, and checked out FTCs sister site for more parts, and ordered a long list of parts. Then I contacted The-ToyBox (Anthony Durso) to see if he could make a suitable box.

Still needs some modification with the wing/cape, but I have some ideas there.

I can probably make the simple belt a round buckle using a .45 cartridge. That may be the right size for the round buckle.

Other than hating the concept, any other comments on adding this to our Batman History?

Neat idea, but that costume is just a terrible design.

Yup, what was Kane thinking? Still, you may fit it into the continuity, as it’s not scary enough. Perhaps he was thinking dark angel instead of Dark Knight

Just think, without the input of Bill Finger, "Bat-Man" wouldn't be any better known today than his contemporaries The Fiery Mask, The Zebra, Airmale and the Red Blazer.

In spite of myself, I dig that figure on the blister card, even if "Bob Kane's Batman" is really just "Bob Kane's tracing of Alex Raymond's Flash Gordon."

I kind of like the "Mego" custom with the bird wings. Feels like it's on the way to being something interesting. Golden Age Red Raven? Alternate universe Robin? Neal Adams-era "Angel" from the "X-Men"?

And is it just me, or do most of these custom head sculpts and body suits look better than most of the official stuff coming from the new Mego company? For sure these boxes are 1000 times cooler.

New Mego certainly isn't spending any money on box art design.

No doubt, I'll be waiting forever, but I'm waiting on an accurate Sprang Batman from Mego. I've yet to see a TRUE Sprang Batman figure out there. When there is, I'll buy it.

I hope we get a good Sprang Batman, too (obviously given my screen name) but for sure it won't be coming from Mego. Even if they got the head sculpt right, it would be 3 sizes too large for the body.

Honestly, given the various attempts to realize Sprang's art in three dimensions -- from action figures to statues -- I'm beginning to believe it can't be done.

In fairness, though, to do a Sprang Batman correctly, he can't have a neck at all, the barrel chest would require a unique body mold and his feet would need to be the size of an 8-year-old girl's. Unless it was glued to a base it probably wouldn't be able to stand up.

I guess Bat-Sprang would have to be custom made. If One looks carefully at Sprang's art, however, Bat DOES have a neck, its just that the cape is so thick around the neck.

The Classic Golden Age Mezco Batman is pretty Sprang centric, it's about as close as I've ever seen.
