Eli Wallach R.I.P.

Post by Jim Akin »

The last of the Mr. Freezes has passed away. Eli Wallach had an amazing career, and he will be missed by many.

As many here may know, Eli was my favorite Freeze, so this is a pretty big bummer for me. I was lucky enough to correspond with him on several occasions and even recieved advice from him when I was putting together my Freeze costume. (based on his portrayal, of course)

A great man who will be sorely missed...

Not simply the last of the Mr. Freeze's but the last male Batman villain, period. Malachi Throne and Cliff Robertson were the last two before him.

Not exactly. John Astin is still with us.

You're right, I stand corrected. That makes Astin the last one.

I was very sad to read this today. He was such a nice man. When I wrote him for an autograph he had sent me a very nice post card on back with a nice touching message. One of the all time greats!!

Sad news. In his autobiography, he had a funny comparison of what he was paid to play Mr. Freeze in 1967 and what Arnold Schwarzenegger was paid 30 years later. Wallach wrote incorrectly that he was paid $300 (it was actually the standard $3500) but it still was a very humorous passage as he talked about the disparity in salary.

He also had a terrific scene in the 1959 movie Seven Thieves in which he portrayed a saxophone player and he 'played' while Joan Collins 'stripped,' at least as much as Mr. Censor would allow.

An incredibly versatile actor.
'I thought Siren was perfect for Joan.'--Stanley Ralph Ross, writer of 'The Wail of the Siren'

My hobbies include gazing at the Siren and doing her bidding, evil or otherwise.

'She had a devastating, hypnotic effect on all the men.'--A schoolmate describing Joan Collins at age 17

Wasn't he the last surviving Misfits star too (Gable RIP , Monroe RIP , Clift RIP......they passed a long , long time ago though)

Some of Wallach's co-stars : Eastwood , Streisand , McQueen , Coburn , Brynner , Robert Shaw , Monroe , Gable......not exactly small potatoes

Prolly Michael Douglas as well........

Found this online:
The MeTV Network will pay tribute to the late Eli Wallach this Saturday (June 28). They will air both of his Batman episodes starting at 7:00pm ET, as a tribute.
