Fabrics for the Hot Toys Robin cape

Post by wally wingert »

One of the many things wrong with the Hot Toys Robin figure is his teeny-tiny shorty cape. It's tough to find that exact fabric that's on the figure, but at International Silks and Woolens in L.A. I found a few contenders that are very close.

One is a champagne/gold color (slightly darker than the original Hot Toys cape) and the other is a yellow/gold (slightly lighter than the original Hot Toys cape).

The first would have a pretty decent "original" look, while the other will be nice if you want that "as-seen-on-TV" look. It's a deeper, richer yellow than the typical canary yellow that's out there.

Tony Mei and I are going to make capes out of both and see which one looks better on the figure.

Now to do something about those rancid, floppy-doodle Robin slippers!

Is that what was referred to as silk charmeuse? Thinner material than regular satin, but thus better for a miniature - I got some at Michael Levine in downtown L.A. when I was working on Aztec dance costumes; might be cheaper there?

I'm not sure of the name. I was in a rush buying something else and these caught my eye. I grabbed the bolts and had a yard cut from each and ran out the door. I'm sure Levine's might be cheaper, but the trade-off is I don't have to go into downtown. ICK!

This is soft, thin and buttery. I think they'll make great capes. Definitely a lot thinner than bridal satin. Tony said he's coming by soon to pick up the material and begin his experimentation.

I'm going to keep a 1/2 yard of each and see what my seamstress can do as well. According to my calculations, the current Hot Toys Robin cape needs an additional 1 1/2" on the bottom to be more accurate.

Anyone else working on this same kind of thing?

Aha. From your description that does sound like silk charmeuse (which is a synthetic despite the name). I recall IS&W also had a cotton-backed satin; was that used on the original capes? Much heavier than bridal satin and drapes really well; used to be used long ago for high-end satin jackets, basketball shorts and warm-ups, etc.
