Looking for Burt Ward/Robin personal appearance commercial

Post by wayoutjunk »

Back in the late '60s - early '70s, Burt Ward was going to make a personal appearance at one of our local department stores. I remember there was a commercial advertising it, and I would love to see it again. I don't remember a lot about it, except I think it was what they call a "doughnut" type commercial, where the information at the beginning and end was generic, but the local information with times and dates would be put in the middle of it. It was basically Ward (as Robin) talking to the camera about making an appearance in town. The only bit I remember was (after what I thought was the local bit), Ward bounded in with a rolled-up newspaper saying to check our local paper for more details.

Does anybody here remember this ad, or (even better) is it online somewhere?

I had a similar experience. In Tennessee in the early 70's, Burt Ward during an personal appearance -- I remember in the local paper he said he received "a six figure check" :) -- he did a commercial for Magnavox, a now defunct maker of U.S. built TV's. I remember he said, "Holy Same Day Financing!" Or something like that. He must have made dozens and dozens of these things during that period. He was just looking to get paid. They're either moldering in some local TV affiliate's film warehouse, or just gone. Pity, I'd love to see that one again too.

This is NOT the one you're talking about:

The only way you're going to see local commercials like that again is if you find someone who recorded direct off the air back then. Which isn't likely for pre-1976 material. We had posted here once from YT a 1976 commercial of Julie Newmar plugging sales specials for the week at E.J. Korvette's, a New York store chain that went under in the early 80s, and that's only because someone was recording on an early Beta machine at the time (They hit the market in 1976).

Here's that Korvette's spot. She should have still been getting good acting gigs at that point in time!

According to this article, Adam lost that particular lawsuit over that other spot.

Except that I think it was a spot that played wherever Ward made a personal appearance. Only the part in the middle would be considered "local". I wouldn't expect to see it with my local info.

I know it's still a long shot, but it's amazing what video clips you can find online. (And thanks to linking to that Korvette's clip. I'd never seen it before.)

Yeah, I understand there could be a lot of variants for a "one size all" type spot if you will. But if it were pre-1976 the chances of finding it would be slim because it would have to be on an off-air recording of a program running local spots. It wouldn't for instance be the kind of commercial you'd find on a network film print or archival videotape of a program because on those copies you'd see only the national ads and blank space for where local stations would put in their own ads.

Great find!

Maybe after E.J. Korvette went out of business, Catwoman could have used the stores as hideouts. 8-)
