The Monkees s2 ep 26 The Monkees Blow Their Minds

While catching up on some outdated tv I was in for a shock while watching the Monkees. Who remembers that The Penguin showed up towards the end of the episode?

Interesting! Thanks for that find. I wonder how that came about, though? From what I read, the two shows weren't done by the same studio, and not on the same network.

This happened in 1968, either right before or right AFTER they cancelled Batman. Penguin had no lines except for a few "Waugh! Waugh! Waugh!"'s, and wore a black top hat instead of his purple one. :)

I have no idea if this is true, but the one reviewer of the episode on IMDB says the following:
"Broadcast no. 57 (Mar 11 1968), "Monkees Blow Their Minds" was actually filmed a year earlier (Apr 18-20 1967), but featured a special introduction shot around Christmastime: Frank Zappa, riding high with his Mothers of Invention, posing as Nesmith ...."
If that's true, could they have held the episode because of an objection by NBC that they didn't want to promote an ABC program, and it only got aired once Batman was cancelled? Or you'd think NBC would have just made them cut out the Penguin shots.

If Bob Furmanek is reading this, have you come across anything about this in any of the publications you've been looking through?

They definitely held it back, assuming the link below's numbers are correct. It was the eighth episode filmed, but the 25th shown. It was broadcast three days before the Batman finale, and was the second-last ep for The Monkees:

And lets not forget that Clark Kent/Superman showed up in the episode The Audition.

The Monkees meet Superman

The fun factor it is based on the George Reeves Superman.

You probably all know this, but there was a Monkees episode called 'Captain Kangaroo', which had a spoof version of Batman called Frogman and Reuben the Tadpole. They staged a fight against the other two members of the group (dressed as villains), complete with strange new batfight words.

I had this on video long before any Batman re-runs came along, and watched this clip loads of times.

Captain Crocodile, actually. The scene is about halfway through the episode. It's somewhere on YT.

That, and Micky one referred to his grappling hook (in heroic voice) as the "Bat-hook" while the Monkees' red phone was under a glass cake topper similar to Commissioner Gordon's.

I found the Frogman and Reuben the Tadpole fight scene on youtube. Just type in: "Frogman and Reuben the Tadpole" in their search window, and it'll take you to the scene. :)
