My first outing as the Batman. Sorta..(question about smoke)

Sorry if this upsets some of you... Traditionalist or something..

Anyways, Okay so my friends play in a Heavy Metal band and they play a song called Bruce Wayne.

So my friend knows I've been building a Batman costume and has asked me to appear as Batman on stage. The only twist is I'd be using a different kind of mask. The Mask

Of course I'll be painted it close to try and match the costume. It won't look perfect but I think it'll work. That's why I've posted this topic here because I'm going to try to paint the mask close to the Adam West cowl mask. Any advice is appreciated.


My only problem with this however is that the show is in a bar that you can smoke in. I've invested a lot of money into the cape, the tights, and so on... I'd hate for them to reek of smoke and have no way to get the smell out.

I own the onstage dance tights.

I own a cape that seems to be made out of close to the same fabric as the gloves and shorts.

The gloves and shorts are from Williams Studio.

I would never wear my cowl from Chuck (still waiting on it to arrive ).

So I'm torn between whether I should do it or not. Does anyone have any experience with their suits smelling like smoke? Possibly a smoker among us? Any help is appreciated, I'd like to help my friend out but at the same time I don't want to ruin something I've invested a lot of time and money into.

Have to agree on not wearing the cowl,Bought my Chuck top of the line cowl 3 years or so ago and never want to handle it,too nice.
Have 2 other ones from top members here, and do wear one of them.
I don't think for a one night stand there would be an issue, I would be more concerned about stains, and asking a smoker,they wont be able to tell.

I do know, with my Gaspar gloves only worn 1 time, the leather portion will slightly darken at the fingertips from just holding 1,2,3 , lost track, cans of sweaty aluminum cans.

An anecdote:

I keep my costumes in plastic garment bags in a room in my shop, which is in a very old factory building with hardwood floors and brick walls. I don't normally close the door to the costume room, because I want the air to flow freely. Two years ago, there was a small fire under my furnace, and my shop was filled with smoke. I am STILL cleaning up soot from that little event, and most of my costumes absorbed some bit of odor from the fire. It has taken two years to get to the point where I don't really smell smoke on them anymore. That exposure to smoke was probably less than two hours, because I just happened to be at the shop when the fire broke out, and extinguished it. (BTW, I keep my cowls in acrylic display cases, or a plastic hat case, and they never smelled of smoke.)

I wouldn't do it, and put my expensive items at risk, but I suspect I'm an old fuddy-duddy.

For an appearance at a bar, for a couple of minutes as a favor to a friend, your exposure would probably be minimal. (But get in and out fast - no lengthy photo ops with drunken patrons!)

I think if you do this you will regret it later. That's alotta $$ you've spent on authenticity. If you really want to add the Adam West look for the costume part, I'd recommend either a gray t-shirt with the AW chest emblem (you can make one using the downloadable emblem on this site) or get the 1966 sub-dye t-shirt:

Then fabricate a cape out of a piece of stretch satin or something for effect and a pair of gloves. You'll still come across as a distorted version of Batman!

I agree with RRR. I wouldn't do it either. Too much money and too many careless people in a bar, especially after a few beers. It only takes a second for someone to beer stain a cape, or god forbid, ANY cowl! You will regret it afterwards.

The slightest contact and certainly the costume's presence in a bar where smoking is permitted will result in smoke permeating the garments.

I would absolutely not do this with my (Robin) costume. There have even been occasions on which I was driving with it on when people with cigarettes have approached my window and I've asked them to discard it (appropriately, citizens...) before continuing.

I was almost settled on the idea of doing it. I began to read all of your input and I must say you've talked me out of it. But I still think I'm going to create a zombie like batman 66 suit.

But thanks to all of you, I think you talked me out of a big mistake.

I am going to talk with them and maybe I can appear at one of their shows where people aren't smoking.

a "zombie" version of this suit could be easy to do on the cheap, since it doesn't have to be that "accurate"
you can cheap tights, cape, and boots - rip, stain, and "zombiey" them. Please do not ruin the good stuff.
Unless you got deep pockets to replace.......

I totally agree.

Go down the route of putting together a "stunt" suit that you are not as financially or sentimentally attached to.
