R.I.P. Al Checco, Penguin Henchman 'Dove'

Post by Shemp »

Al Checco has died, on July 19 two days before his 94th birthday. The sad news was announced by Al's close and dear friend, actress Francine York ('Ms. Limpet').

Al guest-starred as 'Dove' in "The Penguin Goes Straight / Not Yet He Ain't."

Al Checco and Harvey Lembeck, with Burgess Meredith...

That's crazy -- he didn't look young even then! He played cab drivers, and desk clerks on series TV. And a bank robber on Andy Griffith as well as a crook on Gomer Pyle. An unathletic looking man, Batman was probably his most physical role by far. :) He was also in the Mr. Terrific pilot. Still, he had a noteworthy career. In an era when TV was full of interesting character actors who had honed their craft in theater or live TV in New York. I enjoy many shows, but these days good character actors are so rare in film or TV they tend to become stars. Paul Giamatti or Richard Jenkins for example.
