Batcharge Launcher

Post by rajung »

I just scored a sonic blaster today for what I think was cheap" missing scope though" , and was wondering if anyone else has converted one into the Batzooka and willing to share the measurements for the 3 different sized bats for the end of the barrel that they used.
thanks folks.

Well, that old thread contains no hard info re: dimensions, but it ought to be fairly simple to make a reasonably close estimate. Note that the bats are actually all different sizes, not all the same as indicated in that schematic shown in that old thread.

You HAVE the toy, so just look at the relative size compared with the barrel in photos of the real prop. My favorite trick is to try to print up a full scale picture, and then measure. For example, if the barrel is 6" wide, looks like the front bat would be... and so on. A lot easier than trying to make a replica prop from scratch, like I did with my super powered batmagnet. For that, I had to estimate relative size based on guesses as to how big Adam's hands were, the size of the chest emblem relative to its proximity to the prop, etc!

Have fun, and be sure to post your progress, or at least finished prop!

Well I finished it, really had to guess on the 3 different sized bats.the image of them on the post above wasn't correct.
Came up with the large one and then just scanned and re sized with the printer until it was close.
Now to make a stand so it doesn't fall over.
On some of the bluray screen grabs I created and printed out, it looks like the original prop had some of the bat tips broken off.

Looks fantastic. Could you tell us a bit more how you made it and with what materials?

This turned out really nicely, great job. Are you looking to add the metallic hose pipe to the rear?

For the rear pipe, I don't think so,I am making a stand for it and being on a shelf by the car would be a nuisance and get in the way.
Still need to fabricate a scope, but all of these blasters I have seen 99% have the scope missing.
The different sized bats were made from .188" white acrylic. using a scroll saw.
The yellow tube on the rocket and back of cannon was from a 1/4" yellow guitar/amplifier patch cable, much more flexible than per say a round drop cord.
The connectors for the rear yellow cord, I used 1/4" weather tight cord grippers .It was either that or they could have been a aluminum connectors and fuel line originally.
1" wooden dowel cut to length and the tip made from a Estes rocket with a .98" main body.
I cut the hollow plastic rocket tip down in length, created a flat back for it to attach to the end of the wooden dowel.I could have filled it with resin and leveled it .I just used one of the 3 plastic fins that come with the rocket, and cut a circular disc out of one slightly smaller than the cut down nose cone ,inserted and glued.

Thanks for the comments.
I threw a stand together quick and took another pick from the back side to show the 2 connectors used for someones reference if needed.

Looks great! Nicely done! Think I'll have to steal your rocket nose cone idea - makes for a nice finish!

Well done! Love the stand too. Wish I'd seen this earlier, I would've posted these pics I found of an original prop auction for you:

You can see quite a bit of detail in these shots... including blobs of glue/fixative they used to hold pieces on. It looks like the front nose fins were made out of a very thing metal and suffered from some bends... also the very front fin has come loose and slid back from it's original position. You can also get a good look at the rocket piece on top... definitely made of wood. The only things I can see you're missing (aside from the scope) is the end cap piece they added as a bushing/housing for the hose connector and the little stabilizer screw near the front of the rocket. Wish they had included more angles in the auction photos but these definitely give a good close up look at the bulk of it.

You can even see that there's a bit of clay or something under the middle of the rocket.

I picked up one cheap (with half of the scope broken off- must have been very common) about a year ago and have been tinkering with it on and off. I decided to rebuild the scope. I used Magic Sculpt and bunch of bits and bobs from sprinkler parts- and a bottle cap for good measure. For the rocket I used PVC pipe and an Estes rocket tip... although the rocket tip did not have the proper pointy end, so I had to shear it off and Magic Sculpt a new one.

I'd be very interested to know how you designed the bat fins to slide on and stay.

Again, fantastic work!
