Knob and dial to upgrade your Shakespeare bust

Post by ChrisPappas »

I've developed an exact-replica metal dial to upgrade your Whiz Bang or Diamond Select Shakespeare bust.

Available on eBay (http://www.ebay.com/itm/292127077469), or you can contact me directly.

For a limited time, I'm including the correct vintage knob with a dial purchase.

Can this be used to turn on the switch that it would be replacing in the bust, or is it only ornamental? I have the plug in version with the light up bulb that can be used to turn on a light, etc.

The knob is meant to be mounted to an existing rotary switch.

So, I need to pull of the existing switch to see if it will work.

Whatever you have, strip it down until there is just a hole. Insert a rotary switch (reuse original, if possible) add dial plate, add switch's nut to secure switch and dial, add knob and secure with set screw.

Unfortunately, you will have to replace the "whizzbang" bust switch as it doesn't have a stem which the new "chicken head" knob needs to work. There is a lot of work involved. The whole neckpiece has to come out to get access to the wiring and switch. The original switch looks something like this one: Image.

First, remove the two screws that hold the head to the hinge. Then the neck insert must be removed, it is a "cold cast" resin piece which is very fragile and has been heavily glued onto a cross-hatched "lip". It usually breaks in half when attempting removal because of the holes drilled for the switch and light. A little heat from a heat gun or hair dryer will help. I usually use a thin flat screwdriver to slowly and carefully pry up along the edge.

Good luck and be careful!

Thanks for the info Andy. There is a really good chance that I will break it before I even get close, so I will leave it as is.

My set has arrived, can't wait for the Diamond Select Shakespeare bust to be released, so I can put this in

Greatlakes6,

I was in no way trying to talk you out of this, you definitely want this knob and plate. It's spot on.

You can easily use the pieces (if it breaks) to make a template on thick styrene that you can get at most hobby store and replace the neck piece. I've done it a lot and if I can do it, anyone can.
