Batsuit Designer?

Post by Keith Mayo »

Is there any information on who was responsible for designing Adam West's costume?

I saw a video with Adam mentioning the name, but I couldn't understand what he said (bad audio).

What? You and Wally must be hallucinating, even Wally's interview with Jan must be a dream....IMDB doesn't even mention him Lol.😀

They say it's Pat Barto. ???

Wonder how we can add Jan's name to that list of whoever Pat Barto is.

Around the time of the Keaton movie (1988ish) when all the talk shows were doing Batman reunions one of the shows, Vicki maybe, had Kemp on as a guest and he talked about the costumes. Its on YouTube.

For those who haven't seen it yet:

Great clip with the man himself, Jan Kemp, as well as some other faces we may recognize ;)

Gotta love the way Bob Kane butts in. Entirely characteristic (to be polite)!

I've submitted a page alteration to include Jan's credit as Principal Costume Designer for the run of the show. IMBD are quite stringent about verifying facts before publishing user contributed updates, but all being well it should appear there in the next 72hrs or so.

Jan's batsuit design brings up an interesting point-- many Batman fans who don't love the show point to how "ridiculous" Adam looked in the suit. I don't see it at all-- and I think todays rubber suited Batmen look FAR more ridiculous than Adam or even Lew Wilson ever did. Affleck looks bloated in all the publicity shots for Justice League (don't get me started on that one) and I don't think Bale with his absolutely laugh out loud voice looked much better.

I think Jan nailed it-- he got the comic book look as close as possible in a live action show.
To each his own I guess.

I don't like rubber superhero costumes in general.

The '66 cowl looks just like the New Look comic book version, in my opinion. Much closer than the rubber masks of later films.
