IT...COULD.....WORK!

Post by Chuck Williams »

Said in my best Gene Wilder, Young Frankenstein yell... LOL!

The first step in hopefully building a Batmobile beacon cage.

I had heard George Barris thought that the effects folks at 20th Century use a pie plate for the top of the beacon cage which is why it was not something George could reproduce easily and why the beacons on the replicas all had their own look.

Well I love a challenge of finding found parts so for years I have poked around to find a plate that, size wise could work.
I had the similar flashing light used for the Batmobile for scale.

Fast forward a decade or so and it suddenly got real!

It's only a proof of concept at this time with some rough spots but a good first step in making an elusive beacon cage...

Most report everything was aluminum.

Here's a shot of it as I ponder the angles and sizes of the other components...

I would be lost without masking tape and popsicle sticks!

Looks awesome so far! I recall hearing once that the original cage was a vent cover that Barris had lying around. Others ever hear this story?

A handful of us are pretty sure that 20th Century Fox special effects provided the beacon cage, along with the Batphone and the Detect-a-scope, and that is why the items were removed when the show was cancelled (more than likely for souvenir hunters).

Yep, the 20th C. Fox effects group made this in my opinion and the antlers or the replicas Barris build would have had dead on replicas. The more you look at this the more hand made it becomes. I used to think it was some sort of filter basket with stuff tacked on but now I think it was simply scratch built.

I would have thought that thing was some spare part for something else. The pIe plate thing is interesting.

Chuck,
Another great effort! I’m inclined to agree with you as well, in that there was precious little time to put together this vehicle. So, in keeping with that known fact, it comports with “Occams Razor” to fashion that visual effect they were looking for with whatever they may have had that just worked! I also love your Young Frankenstein reference! So, as you progress with this, why don’t you enjoy....”Perhaps some Ovaltine”?

To say I'm sneaking up on this is an understatement!!! LOL!

Found a stock aluminum angle that looks to be the right scale.

By cutting up another pie tin, I doubled the thickness where it meets the lamp which seems to give it just the right amount of reveal at the top...

Not enough time to play with this as much as I would like!!
