Mattel's 1939 Batman 12" figure

Post by John Mack »

Also comes with an incorrect Batarang and a mini comic of Detective #27.

Cool, although it is obviously skewed toward a younger audience, but I’m glad that kids can be introduced to the original Batman. The mini comic was a nice touch.

Looks more like they re-tooled a 2004 The Batman animated Figure. :o

They certainly may have-- and this is a cheap kids toy-- but there was some legit care done to match the costume Batman wore only once-- in Detective #27-
1- Purple gloves
2- Long Black Boots
3- Tall cheek cuts of the cowl
4- Ears extend more from the side
5- Bat emblem has no bat head.
6- Round Belt Buckle

The only glaring thing they missed is the bright blue interior cape. The purple gloves and the round belt buckle only appear that one time before they switch to a square buckle and first no gloves, then blue gloves. I think THE BATMAN animated show took a lot of cues from the 1939 outfit.

The old "First Appearance" figure from DC Direct is still the gold standard, IMHO.

3. Detective #29 – Gloves are back as short blue.

It all depends on which newspaper strip or pulp magazine Kane was tracing from in a given panel.
